Default Horn Player

This horn player in DINGLE TOWN, IRELAND, seems to have drawn an auadience for his lunch time concert.

Looks like you live in a cool place. Would have loved to see this guy up close in a photo. Looks like a good "character". Also, forgive me for saying this, I think the squar-ish format here puts too much dead space in the foreground. What do you think? Like the colors and exposure, but wish that one strip of sky in the middle wasn't there. As you guys say, cheers! Oh and what the hell, I can't resist: Nice donkey!

Two things here
1. If I made the image long and narrow it would stretch the animal badly
2. No matter which way one looks at it, unless I chop someathing badly, I do not how that bit of sky can go. If it is cloned - the image would look false. If I moved to my left, that would hide the sky - and horn player's face as well. If I moved to the right, I may have put in more sky. This was basically all I could do as it was just a quick 'grab shot' anyway.

I will see if I can bring out the horn player and have him 'solo'.

Yeah, you are probably right, but I was imagining a picture where you pointed the camera up more and to the left, therefore you could maintain your dimensions, but see more of the building which would be more interesting than the street. Just my thoughts. Goofup had a tutorial on replacing sky in a picture that looked pretty good to me. See what you think. Sorry about the last comment. I meant no disrespect to you and now regret it.

I meant to add - we live in Canada, not Eire. This was done on our tour over there. Some areas do interest me as possible places to live.

I will look into an image in my art books that has more of the buildings and less of the foreground. My only thought is - would it bend the upper walls and top of the buildings too much?

Sadly, I do not have any swing and tilts on this cam - I would love 'em - but...

I will also, check the sky thread and see what was suggested in there as well.

Norm,

The single largest thing in this image is the donkey, and you are right by cropping off the bottom of the image, the donkey would look even larger. The culprit? The angle in which this was shot! The animal is flat to the camera. Almost nothing looks good when photographed flat to the camera, and add that he is several times larger than the two people and we have a problem. Also this camera angle provides us with the horn player giving us a huge crotch shot pose. Had you moved about 3 meters to camera right, the animal would appear considerably smaller and we would not have a crotch shot on the musician and your wife, since she would now be closer to the camera would be more prominant in the image. If, for some reason you could not move three meters to camera right, I'm sure if you dropped a pound sterling in his cup and asked him to reposition himself for the camera he would agree, then you could pose everything exactly the way you want it. I do this frequently for my "candid" shots.

My thanks, Ben, for the ideas next time I come across a musician.

If I had gone to the right, I wonder if the sky would have shown more. I did not check it - due to time limits - much as I would like to.

On bus tours like this, they do not give us a great deal of tlme - outside of getting food - when one considers the line ups at the counters and waiting for tables. Next time we will go on our own and may have time to make the changes suggested.

Norm I think it's pretty good for a quick grab shot. I can appreciate that on a tour such as the one you and Anne went on that it might not be the easiest thing to take your time and search for compositions. I'm a believer that it is better to take a picture than not. At the end of the day you will still have a memory of what was I'm sure a wonderful experience.

Maurice

A Blue Ribbon to you mate. Bus tours DO NOT ALLOW TIME for FOR GOOD COMPOSITIONS.

As you say, it is take it or lose it. In this case, I went for it. With my videocam, I put the cam right on the road and picked him up playing a few notes. I love my waste level eye piece and the screen that lays flat, too.

Oh,

When I commented on this image I didn't realize you were on a tour bus and time was at a premium. Had I known this I would have changed my comments a bit.

Ben

No problem about what you thought. I should have made it plain we were in a tight spot at the time.

Where we were - a small town - all eateries around where he was - and people gathered around all over - walking around - not just our group either - it makes for a very hard time to do anything decent. Had I moved right - I would be in front of someone else (bad feelings would occur) and lost my spot where I was here as well.

Not just regular holiday folks, but many tour busses seem to come in around mid day. I guess they have to book cafe's and times. Crowds do abound. It does not make for a good image environment no matter which way one looks at it.

DINGLE TOWN is a very poular point in that area. Tour boats depart from there to see if the porpoises are frolicking out a ways from shore and that also draws a good number of folks as well. We we not scheduled to go out as part of our tour.

Next time I will make a list of what to pay attention to and try to follow my lists - as best I can.

I will make a note of these here for future reference.
