Default Harsh lighting = bad lighting?

Harsh lighting is often considered bad lighting. I'm working on a series of shots at the moment where I'm trying to use harsh lighting effectively. This is one of those shots.

Comments welcome

Harsh (portrait) lighting usually looks good on individuals like body builders, construction workers and crusty old men. It usually doesn't look good on beauty pageant women, babies and little girls.

Well it works for me! The harsh lighting really defines his muscles and I think the shadow adds something to it. Well done. Great experimenting.

aha... after three or four tries the image finally showed up!

That is a awesome image too btw.. glad I kept trying !

Did you add the vignette in PP or in camera? He seems like a experienced model (don't know if he really is or not).. I'm excited to see how your series on harsh lighting continues.

It certainly looks better on him than it did on me!

I like this image a lot, in particular the shadow, but I wonder why the edge of it is double? More than one light?

What did you put on him to make him shiny?

Thanks everyone.

The vignette is a natural vignette caused by the light, but then it's pushed a little in PS to add contrast. I'm not sure why there's a double shadow, but it's a natural lighting artifact. As for making him shiny, I had the makeup artist rub some baby oil on him, which I'm sure you can image, she hated every minute of Thanks again for the comments and feedback

Your harsh lighting works very well on him. He fits the harsh lighting category set out by Benji as well. Nice.
