The feet are the problem here for me. One the first one they are cut off and on the second one. Formal dress and then bar feet does not work for me. I would also expose/develop them a little bit darker. His expression in the second one is better if only the feet ...

his shirt is slightly overexposed on both of them (mostly the 1st one). I much prefer the second one, simply because its more natural and he looks happy. He looks like a cool boy. The bare feet don't bother me, he's just a kid.
I'd ditch the chair. good effort, all in all, I like them!! =) |

Thanks for the opinions. The feet, that's one of the compromises I had to make to get him to wear his white shirt and tie. He would'nt wear shoes. But I liked the contrast of his dress shirt and tie and the bare feet after I saw it. Mainly, I was trying for a high-key effect over-all. I know the chair does'nt really suit the photo, but it's all I had at the moment. I was hoping to also get some help with the lighting on his face. Is it too much on the left or is it acceptable?
Thanks again for the suggestions, I'm a rank beginner and need all the help I can get. Barb. |

the lighting on the face would be fine if it was a close up of the face,it would be dramatic. but the light doesnt really work for this shot.Diffuseing the light would help.
I dont really like the subject directly in the center of the image The position of the eyes bother me alittle, looks like the shot was missed.(in the first image) All in All its a good start, just play with the light some more and be more creative with the poses. hope this helps |

I like the lighting in the second one. I can see the point of the bare feet, but I agree, he's* a kid and it works here. It would feel more formal with dress shoes. The chair doesn't bother me.
BTW, welcome to Photo Camel and have a Karma for a great first post. |

I like the second better than the first andactually like the bare feet witht he suit... makes it more childlike... however that busy background is bugging me. Something solid colour would work better, something in a darker shade, may it be a brown, blue or even deep red
