Default Portrait lighting help

Here are a few of my son goofing around while I'm trying to figure out lighting. Right now I only have a nikon sb-600 and a nikon sb-800. I'm interested in hearing input about the lighting. I am new and need lots of input.

Thanks

Rich

Watch the blowouts - take a look at the boy's right shoulder.

Nice catch light in the eyes. I agree with the the others be carefull of blowing out the highlights . The pose does leave a lot to be desired but I understand how tough it is to get someone to sit while you experiment with the lights. From your comments you were doing the light thing. Keep after it and later you can work on the poses.

Thanks for the input. I hadn't noticed the sholder blow out, but I can see it now. The pose is really pretty bad, but trying to get me 12 year old to do much of anything at one time is a challenge to say the least.

The quality of the light is very nice, and I like the nice transition from highlight to shadow on his face. I too don't care for the pose, but just about ANY boy hates to have his photograph taken, especially a 12 year old!

I don't think the shoulder is blown out, yes it is bright but it should be brighter than the other shoulder because it is closer to the light source. Five seconds with the Burn tool in Photoshop would take it down nicely.

I agree that the shoulder doesnt look blown out. The colors are still vibrant.. if it was blown out, they were faded.
