It's not very often I get involved in this forum section, but I do learn a lot from you all.
I am so disappointed that this picture was criticized for not following the "rules".
Yes, rules are there, but they are there to be broken as you all know.
The girl on the right is not looking into the lens and gives the feeling that she disassociated from every thing around her except her sister. She has her head tilted into her sister, and the body language suggests that the girl on the left is touching intimately.
The body intimacy suggests a closeness that formal picture cannot produce. With their hands together it forms a lovely triangle.
I can imagine that if this picture was taken with both girls sitting upright and looking directly into the lens a classic portrait situation. But no emotion.
And oh boy. This has emotion!

You make a great point Ed. I like the image a lot even though I would prefer to see both faces... Stiff structured poses can look rather unnatural and I have often said so here.
