Default 50mm f/1.0

My brother-in-law said he used to have an old manual focus 50mm f/1.0 lens, he forgets the make. Did such a thing ever exist? If so, where can I get one?

Canon used to make one too. It was in the same casing, and shared the same AF mechanism as, the 85mm f/1.2L. I cost in the range of $3000 new as well.

Alf,

it's funny that you dug up that one. I got one of those old 8mm film cameras from Canon of that time. One day I discovered an old Canon brochure in the original bag. The same lens was listed in the catalogue.

I guess that was really the 'fastest chicken in the south'.

I remember reading a review on that lens (and 8 other Canon normal lenses) in my issue of Camera 35 that I subscribed to at the time.

How sharp was this lens? I've used some very fast lenses in the past, but in the end they didn't have the resolution wide open (and from my current old fast lenses, they certainly show their deficiencies when mounted on a digital body).

As I recall - this was, after all, 40 years ago - it wasn't all that bad considering its speed, but it came up a little short on contrast, which the reviewer forgave because of the extraordinary light gathering power of the lens.

Check out this guys website. This is the lens he is using. Now his "eye" and technique are what makes for the beautiful images and this is the tool he is using. Until I decide I need ione, I guess I'll just have to settle for my 50mm f1.2 Zuiko with an equivalent of 100mm f1.2 when used on my e-1. The website is: http://www.clayharmon.net/ and he does, in my opinion, do some really nice work. Bill Barber
