I don't cary my camera in a bag, D40 with Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8
In my camera bag, which fits inside my day pack, I have a CPL, extra battery, infrared remote and set of extension tubes, sometimes my SB600 flash. I live in the greater mid desert area of Arizona but don't feel the need to take my Beretta 9mm with me. In my pack I have (in the order of importance): compass map GPS at least 2Liters of water whistle full tang knife small pruning saw flashlight fire starter ( several different types) including a small container of vasaline saturated cottonballs couple of industrial trash bags (emergency rain gear) cordage of some type couple of food bars band aids and first aid cream of some sort bandana or two signaling mirror plus whatever else I feel like on the day I go out |

Carbon fiber Trekking poles ( i would love to see someone come up with a mounting system so you can turn two trekking poles and one extra one into a tripod) Binoculars 50 ft of Ductape rolled back on itself. Headlamp Rain jacket, rain pants, gloves, toque ( I am at elevation in the Mountains a lot) Small stove for tea 6ft x 8ft silktarp (nice place to sit under and have tea when it starts to storm) 3,000 calories of high energy food Sometimes Bear spray, but the jury is still out on that. Never thought of the Vaseline saturated cotton balls. They WILL be in my bag the next time I go. (great tip Michael) |

Good stuff guys! Joves is ready to shoot or to shoot! didn't see any extra mags though. The expandable baton is interesting, I carry one when I work in uniform, but 'in the wilds' I think a good heavy duty knife or even short machete would be a better use of the weight. Bear spray! never been where I might need it but I bet spraying the ground and running might be better then trying to spray the bear! A old plastic 35mm film canister is great for keeping the vaseline cotton balls in, also a small ziploc snack bag or another film canister with lint from your dryer trap, best is from when you dry a load of cotton towels, mix with your kindling, doesn't last long but goes up VERY quick! Don't forget lighter and matches, a few heavy duty all weather matches also called 'lifeboat' matches are easy to make at home, do a internet search. Also a good quality swiss army knife or a small to medium sized 'leatherman' type multi tool, buy QUALITY! is handy to always have on you or with you. I wear contacts so I keep a old RX. or expired pair of lenses in my camera bag, and a pair in my 'gig' bag for work details. and a pair of glasses in my shaving bag. Oh and I have a bunch of camera stuff in my camera bag LOL!

In my drop holster I have one extra at the front of it. If I need more than one shot then Im having a bad day. Yeah that baton looks like it would work. Is that even legal in Cali?
