Hi all,
I was out for a walk today with the camera along the local canal bank, while walking the path at two different locations I had to pass a few lads in two different groups, one group had been drinking for sure. Now I'd like to think I can look after myself (or at least run fast) but I did get a little worried about my camera (brand new D90 ).So my question is, if it got stolen/taken from me, what insurance would cover it? Thanks Alan __________________

It's really going to depend on your policy and how it's written. Plus you're going to be getting answers from all over the world but insurance coverage tends to be specific to the nation or state.

Basically the same here in Colombia, I was paid off for 2 different cameras on my homeowners (registered beforehand with my agent), one stolen and the other in a capsized boat accident.

You should ask your agent and suggest certain scenarios too to make sure he where you might be using and losing it.
If you had your camera as household contents you might not be covered if it's out of the home without a "rider". Don't worry so much about your camera as to your personal safety that's for sure. No point getting kicked in the head and having an injury like poor Natasha Richardson over a camera. Get it insured and just hand it over if it comes to that and then buy the next latest and greatest. Insurance companies don't want to pay out so ask lots of questions. They might not pay out if it's left in a car and certainly not an unlocked one. I have heard that they will happily say "yes you are insured but when the adjuster comes he can disqualify you if you are professional and it's beyond their "typical household equipment value" Just treat the insurance man as you would those likely-lads... with suspicion. Remember to file a police report immediately - naturally. |

Thanks for the reminder. I need to check with the insurance agent and make sure my camera equipment is covered.
If you do the same, make sure you inquire as to theft from home, auto, location shoot, studio..... With crime on the upswing as the economy heads south, this is more of an issue. We've had a home broken into twice. No camera equipment lost, but much to my surprise our policy only covered up to $1500 in jewelry. Given the number years I've been with my better half, we'll that didn't cover it. Plus the emotional value. Some stuff I had custom made. Just can't repalce that. Then there is the question of replacement value or actual value of say a two year old 40D etc. |
