Default Can anyone identify this effect?

Noticed it when flying recently. Appears to be centered around where I was sitting.

Looks like a rainbow (or rainring in this case )caused by ice crystals in the cold air.

Cheers David

A rainbow? Rainbow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You were sitting in the range of angles that allowed you to see it and the shiny skin of the airplane diffracted the light to make it small and circular.

Was that on the window or out in the clouds? I had a persistant prism like effect on my window on a cloudy flight home a few weeks ago. No matter how I moved the circular rainbow just kind of stuck around.

It's similar to a rainbow and caused by refraction of light as does a prism. And also like a rainbow, you'll never find a pot of gold at the end because as you move the angles of light change and the rainbow seems to move and the location of the end of the rainbow isn't where it first appeared to be.
