Default Re: Dealing with dust

I've been using an e-1 for over a year and a half and have never had any dust problem and I've treated it pretty much the same as any slr. Change lenses when and where I want to and use it with a pinhole body cap (all things which would help to get your sensor dirty). It also gets used in weather that has the other folks heading for shelter. The Olympus lenses are great, although somewhat limited, but with a 7-14mm, 11-22mm, 14-54mm, 50mm macro, 50-200mm, 1.4X and extension tube there are not a tremendous number of holes and the ones which do exist can be filled with my OM lenses in manual mode. There are some other great digital Zuikos which I haven't sprung for yet. Perhaps the biggest limitation, were the truth to be told, is that my pocketbook is the the biggest limitation. Well, not the pocketbook, but rather my tight grip on it would be a little more accurate. I thought I was going to choke when I bought the 7-14mm. Canon and Nikon have a great deal of technology that Olympus does not yet have and Olympus has some the other guys don't. Looks to me like all the systems are in a state of evolution. The dust shaker is kick butt technology and I await the next pro level e sysytem body. Bill Barber

i have a ritual i do. some of it is heresy. I pop my Fuji open and with the shutter closed I use a vacuum to pull out the large dust particles. One must allow for a air vortex to form, but don't seal it. By not forming a seal you can bleed off pressure and it gets almost all the visible dust. Then I turn on the camera and set it to clean mode. here i try to get a visual of the dust. I blow it out with the rocket blaster, then hit the vacuum again.
Out in the field, I usually hit the lens chamber once every 5-10 lens changes.

Do you mean vacuum as in eletric vacuum cleaner?

I remember cleaning machinery that was not earthed and one the tricks the was played on all those that had not done this job was to get them to hold the metal part of the vac hose after about a minuite of sucking powder up they would jump out of there skins as a large amount of static built up and gave them a zap
It was just a thought that you may do the same to your sensor , unlikley but

i use a plactic hose and you really have to bleed off a lot of the pressure so you dont harm the shutter. I keep a 2-5 inch gag between the end of the hose and the camera. basicly i blow the dust loose and the suck it out.

Would second the E-1 lack of dust issue. I've had the odd speck on the mirror that was soon removed with a blast of rocket, but never had anything that has hit the sensor (and it seems this is true for most Oly users). Together with the amazing build quality and weatherproofing it's a robust camera in these respects - though hopefully it will suddenly fall apart around the time I'm looking to buy the new E-3 .

Paul, if that is when it will happen, some of us are hoping tomorrow will be the day it self destructs, however that is not likely to happen . . . as I reach for my OM 1. Bill Barber
