I teach an introduction to digital photography class and at the beginning of the class, everybody signs up for a PhotoCamel account. Today we practiced shooting the sky to bring more color into sunsets and making the blue sky bluer. Next we discussed the need for fill flash when underexposing the sky to bring out the color. I have encouraged everybody to post a picture here so it will be easy for all of us to share and discuss, and access them the next time our class meets. Not only that, it encourages Camel involvement and practice uploading pictures.
If you are in the class and need help uploading the pictures, do the following: Open the image, open up the IMAGE SIZE dialogue, set the DPI to 72, change the longest side to no more than 800 pixels, choose SAVE AS and set the size so that the image is no larger than 150K. Save the image to a place you can find it (I have a desktop folder called "Camel Posts") and when you want to post it, begin typing a message, but click on the "GO ADVANCED" button to find the upload manager. Click on the Manage Attachments button and browse through your computer until you find the image. Select it, upload it, close the window then hit submit. If somebody knows where there is a tutorial on uploading pictures, please let me know so I can put that link here. We'll see how it works! __________________

Okay...class...if you are checking...here is my first entry into our assignment. Unfortunately I had to use some PS to get this the way I wanted it, but I am going to do some more practicing this weekend. Yep, that's right...practice, practice, practice!
I cross posted this because I also wanted feedback from my friends over in Portraits. If you want to chime in, that would be the place to go. http://photocamel.com/forum/portrait...tml#post490911 |

Thanks. It is an adult ed class, but I keep telling them that if they will post, they will learn. It is intimidating to post, but if you really want to know how ya look, ya gotta let people see you naked.

Kelly,
I think the " I Love JC" t-shirt makes a strong statement which fits the scripture quoted. So perhaps it would be better to be able to more easily read the quote on the T-shirt? Otherwise, why wear and show that t-shirt at all ? And why make it hard to read to the point that it looks like an afterthought? Another thought, and this is just a personal preference.....I'd like to see more ambient light with the strobe exposure being more of a fill than a key light. Maybe even add a warming gel to the strobe light. As it is now, the background looks dead from under-exposure. I'm really not a big fan of the dark bkgd and strobe lit foreground unless there's really something dramatic about the background like backlit clouds or shaft of "God light" through the clouds. Have you ever tried shooting tethered to a laptop outside so you can more accurately see the final capture and lighting? |

See what a good example I am for the class. Post and learn.
Brooks, I had the same concerns as yours in regards to the tee shirt. I had her open her shoulders up more, but she lost the expression on her face and looked a little angrier! My attempt was to try and give the sky some punch, and I think I was just working with the wrong sky here to maximize that effect. I have another shooting in the opposite direction that looks pretty good, not very dramatic, and the flash was used as the fill. I'll find it and post it. Points well taken. |

Kelly - I am looking forward to what your class has to offer!
I will be teaching an art class to 8th graders in the fall in addition to my chorus duties, and I was thinking of doing something similar (only, since they're minors, they can't open an account - I was thinking of posting my students work myself). Thanks for the inspiration - and keep encouraging your students to post their work! ![]() |
