I have read with interest in this and another forum about volunteer work through the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep organization. I learned that several members are participants. This is not something I want to rush into because when I commit, I want to commit with my all, so I would like to know how this organization has lives. Anything else you would like to offer will be appreciated.

Never should cut and paste when you are half asleep....
I would like to know what affect the organization and the experience has had on your life. I know it is not an easy thing to do, it is probably the hardest shoot anyone will ask of you, but, I see it as possibly the most noble and cause worthy contribution I could give. My dad was always a giver, but he never sought attention. I witnessed him give 20.00 on his deathbed to a friend who was in need of a little handout. I have always tried to follow his lead, bringing food to the needy, and giving a little something at Christmas time, but, it has never been enough. Yesterday, I learned about NILMDTS, and I spent the whole morning reading about it, but I am left with wanting to know a little more from those of you who have already done it. Getting to know a few of you by your posts, I know that you do this not for recognition but as a way to share your talents with people who are trying to cling to something at a time when it seems they have nothing to cling to. So, if you would be kind enough to write, not necessarily what you did, but how you endured your own emotions and come through for a family in need. |

Many of us who choose to do this have either experienced the loss of a baby, or know someone who has. I have not had to do a session, yet, but have volunteered to be the area coordinator for my small section of the world, so I will begin to establish contacts with the local medical community.
All anyone gets out of doing this, is the satisfaction of doing something for someone who is experiencing the worst moment of their life. The only experience I can share with you personally, is when one of my Niece's twin boys died before he was able to come home. I saw and felt the pain and there was nothing I could do for them, at the time. I saw joining the NILMDTS organization as a way to help me deal with that thought as well as help other people. The NILMDTS forum is full of images and stories from some of the photographers, parents and relatives. A couple of threads that the public isn't allowed into is the section for photographers to get and give some counseling to each other. The job is very taxing. One statement that prevails, "You suck it up, do the shoot, and go out in the hallway and cry." |

Thanks Harry, I hold you and, people like you, who give from your heart without expecting anything in return, in the highest regards. There are some very worthy causes out there where I can share using my camera, NILMDTS seems the best cause to me. I am going to reflect on some input from different sources to see if I am up to this type of challenge, thanks again for sharing.

I found out last week that my application was accepted. I signed up to do retouching because, I wanted to be able to start out at home. It took over a month after I submitted an application before I heard anything. They then sent me a sample image to retouch. It was heartbreaking but, I did it, sent it in and got a replying saying that I was approved. I sent them the rest of my paperwork a week ago and I'm waiting for things to be finalized.
I believe God gives us the strength to do what He calls us to do...if He calls you to it...He'll see you through it. If you feel meant to do it...do it. Let us know what you decide. There is a lot of support out there and here for you. Lori |

Saw the interview between Ed Pierce and Sam Puc' some time ago. Finally decided to apply and while awaiting approval noticed they had no AC for our area. Was approved for that and got a first phone call as a result (although not approved as a photog for the foundation). The only other photog was 80 miles away and unavailable, so i told them i would do it within the program guidelines - but not as part of the program due to the red tape. They were just thankful to be able to get it done and gladly signed my releases. Angel was born still, no indicators, had passed away 2-3 days before. Some peeling skin and bruises, otherwise a good first session.
I encourage you to apply and at least get into the forum while awaiting approval. Take a real good look around at some of the sessions posted. Will give you a firm grasp on what needs to be done and how to go about doing it. Tremendous support in that community, and like Lori, if you are unable to do the post, some damn good volunteers that can. __________________
