I just found out that I will be teaching Art next year at my new middle school, as well as Music , and thought it might be fun to use photography as the main vehicle for teaching all of the art concepts that I'm supposed to teach.

I was wondering if anyone has any old DSLRs and kit lenses that you're not using any more that you might be willing to donate to my school (I believe that anything up to $499.99 is tax deductible without a form for the federal gov't). I'm not looking for anything state-of-the-art at all - I was thinking of some first generation DSLRs (Canon D30 - no, not the 30D- EOS-D2000, -D6000, Digital Rebel, Nikon D100, FinePix S1, etc.) or, really, anything I can get my hands on.

I would first consider film cameras, but the costs involved for development and printing are prohibitive for a public school that doesn't already have an established photography class. If I'm still teaching the art class after a few years, I might be able to do that, but we'll see. Digital will allow the students to get immediate feedback and save me a boatload on chemicals, paper, etc!

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Even if you can't donate, pointing me to a different forum, person, or mentioning my need to someone you know would be greatly appreciated, too.

Thanks!!!!

Try doing it with point and shoots first. At my public high school, we added a digital photography class during my senior year, and it basically had to be done with point-and-shoots because few kids had access to DSLRs.

It'll suck at first, but it'll be easier to attract interest once the class is somewhat established. Good luck.

Thanks, Michael! I'm not sure if I'll be teaching it again in the coming years, but even if I don't, I want to start a camera club. I figured, too, that most kids wouldn't have access to DSLRs, which is why I asked here - thinking that some of the pros might have one that they have used a lot in the past and don't use now, or have one that they are thinking of off-loading and might want for a tax write-off instead.

I'll also accept any P&S cameras that I can get. Every little bit helps for sure!

Tip: start collecting manuals!
The good news is: you have the web at your disposal. There are hundreds of manuals out there.

Good luck!

Jacco - what do you mean by manuals?

If you mean instructional booklets, I'll have to wait and see what my kiddos bring in for class.
If there's another meaning, please let me know.
