Default IR Filter help

Is there a difference between an IR filter and a dark red filter?
I have used the Hoya R72 in the past with good results, I recently purchased a budget 72mm IR lens. I have tried some shots but they just seem to be dark red and when i desaturate them they just become a normal B&W photo.
I am using a Canon 40D and a Sigma 17-70 2.8.
any thoughts or ideas on this ?

There appears to be a difference. Read this thread. This guy also purchased a budget filter off ebay and got red pictures, not infrareds. Good luck.

thanks for the information, the filter i purchased was an OEC IR 720. i have used the Hoya r72 before so i know the results i should have gotten.
the OEC is nothing but a red filter, so much for trying to save a buck.
