Default Anyone tried these yet?

I know this probably fits in the camera accessories forum, but this one is more active and it kind of fits as well.

Anyone tried these new wireless transfer SD cards:

Eye-Fi » Home

My cameras use CF, but I'm guessing that if the technology works well, then it'll make the transition to CF as well (and it would be cool if it did).

So any initial assessment?

Regards,

Peter

Looks interesting, but no RAW file support and only 'supported' in the US

I see your point about traffic, but I would probably have this moved. Some the low traffic issue might stem from the lack of conscientious thread placement; i.e. threads actually about accessories are not actually in the Accessory forum, so why bother. I think many regulars use the "New Posts" link anyway, so finding threads has more to do with timing and a particular thread's reply rate. But for the new members or those looking for specific information, this can make locating that info more difficult in the long run. Couple that with the fact that JDArt has chosen moderators based on their expertise. In other words, each category is moderated by a subject matter expert, and you might get the best answer from that person. I could be wrong though

Back to your regularly scheduled programming...

I'd also like to know if anyone has tried this product. Looks like it would be great for my compact camera, though mine doesn't take SD.

FWIMBW, logic and history make me make every possible effort to avoid the use of anything wireless that involves RF where the transmitted material is important/critical. I am not in need of the latest, the greatest or the most wireles and I place reliability, accuracy and compete data above sped and gimmicks. I simply believe that in the commercial world, a direct connection, metal-to-metal is most certain.

Just another two cent worth,
Tom

Did a little more reading:

To receive photos in this mode, your computer must be turned on and running the Eye-Fi Manager software.
There lies the rub. I think for this to truly be useful, it would need to communicate using some standard wireless protocol without any special software. For anything sensitive, like what Tom was suggesting, a dedicated, secure line is the way to go. I was thinking of snaps I take at my parents, that I can just send over to her PC to peek a, instead of waiting until I upload to my sharing site.

Seems like a novelty to me. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see an advantage to just putting the card in a reader like I do now. They're $100 for 2gb, if you want multiple cards you have to pay for the wi-fi every time. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think I'd have a use for this.

I think all new "gadgetry" can be labeled "novelty" at first, especially when it is expensive. But as the functionality matures, and becomes more accessible, it may be become an expectation. Think of the first digital cameras. its always to hear and read about new stuff, and imagine whether this will be a keeper, or just a dud. I think wireless will eventually become a standard.

Ladies and Gentleman,

Please be aware that the words "Toy", "Gimmick" and "Novelty" have now become archaic and replaced by the vendor-derived "GOTCHA"!

Tom
