When you buy a new camera these days, are you honest with yourself about how long you'll keep it? Have you given in to gotta-have-the-next-one-itis? How long do you plan to keep your current digital camera?

I got this one planning on using it till it dies. I used my camera before my rebel till it died, and likely would have used the rebel till it died if I didn't feel I actually NEED to go digital, which now I have. Yay.

senses working overtime

I'm honest with myself in the sense that I will always want the shiniest sexiest new gadget, but I'm pretty good at holding off (witness the fact that I only recently bought an Olympus E-1 when it's probably not far from being phased out). I doubt if I'd sell to fund a replacement though, the depreciation doesn't justify it, and this thing will probably go on and on. I usually use the old standby of 'needing' a backup camera once I really decide that a replacement is warranted. I also believe it's more important to invest in some good lenses first, and new bodies second.

I've had my 10D for over a year now. I used a 300D for about 8 months going with a 10D. I didn't upgrade to the 20D, but he 5D may well be in my hands in the not too distant future
I don't see much need to upgrade the 5D unless some SIGNIFICANT technology emerges. |

I still have my original OM-10 camera from 1982. I don't intend on getting rid of it (although I have since bought and sold a number of other OM cameras). I suspect I will be keeping my E-300 for a long time, too.

For me, its all about the money. More like when I get enough money, then I'll look to get a better camera, but not the one I "want" though. With Canon glass investments, the one I want may be a Nikon, and that isn't gonna work...

When my first digital broke (after only two years of service), it was more cost-effective to replace it rather than repair it. Also, it had depreciated so much in value that it was not worth selling. Therefore, I kept it and will probably keep it indefinitely.
History will probably repeat itself for my second digital camera. |

I also fully intend to keep my D70 until it dies. It is a great camera, and I can't imagine needing or wanting anything better in the digital realm. The only caveat would be if my usage changes (e.g. if I should start seriously trying to make money out of photography), I might *need* to upgrade to a professional camera. Otherwise it is hear to stay. With the exception of a super-tele (mega-bux), I have now pretty much completed my 35mm wish-list, and anticipate that the next gear I will buy will be medium / large format film gear. __________________
