Welcome to the Camel, Cem! I just read your post on "Our lives behind the camera" and sounds like you have a very great life.

This discussion on understanding exposure is open to all who want to comment...so dive in!

Thanks for the tip on the utility...Max wouldn't tell me until you came along.

Thanks Kelly for helping me realize that myself. I can't complain, honestly. Isn't it rather funny that sometimes we do not realize how good our own lives are until someone else points it out or until we compare it somebody else's who's less fortunate?

Cheers,

I'm a little late. This is such and active thread. Kelly you obviously have learned quite a bit. That shot of the piano player (or was it an organ) was spot on. Very balanced exposure.

Good work!

Cem: Glad I could help give you a good perspective. Your life, as described, sounds very romantic...okay...a guy can say that.

Max: So glad you are on the Camel. Ever since I have been here I have always enjoyed reading your posts. You have a great attitude. If I ever make my way across the pond )don't hold your breath) I am looking you up. I'll be the guy pointing the light meter at everything, chimping shots, and looking quite befuddled.

Brice: Thanks! I don't want this thread to die! I have come a long way...have a long way to go...but my confidence is building. The collective wisdom of the Camels has helped me half way through the desert of exposure. (Okay...that was a very heavy handed metaphor..but I couldn't resist).

A few more exposures from last weekend. I am taking a course right now on "Habits of the MInd, The Art of Self Directed Learning" and one of the key habits is persistence. If anything, I might say that I have been persistent this summer. I am going to miss having all the free time to improve my work. It makes me very sad to think about it. All of my life (sounds a little melodramatic, doesn't it) I have yearned for some medium to allow me to express my creativity. At a younger age I began enjoying photography, but never really had the opportunity to really get in the game. So many socio/economic/psychological things in the mix. Now, I just can't get enough. I don't know exactly what it is...but a day without my camera makes me feel very naked.

...at the pace you are picking up 'photography', by the time you -finally- cross that Big Pond, your eyes and mind will meter/analyse the light better than any meter , your LCD screen wll be set to 'off' and you could even look like a Real Photographer... (tip: wear black!)

Kindest regards!

Awesome work Kelly Care to share your set-up for the last bride shot with the windows?? I looked at the Exif, but I'm curious about the flash in particular

What is the big difference between these great latest images and the earlier ones?

Contrast range. You don't have full sun and deep shadows now. Just about everything in the scene can be captured. You've controlled the environment. Good work.

Thank you everybody.

John Franchot: I have been thinking that I better bone up on sharpening, because I am lacking. That is my next task, to read and apply your tutorial.

Jay: I was messing with the flash so much I can't tell you exactly what was going on. I was bouncing it as much as I could...the ceilings were about 10 feet tall and I was using a Stofen diffuser. I kept spinning the flash to over/undercompensate until I had little or now shadow. I know for the couch shot I exposed for the window shade. Does that help?

Pensive: Thanks.

JohnC: I am afraid to shoot outdoors.

Brice: I was really having a alot of fun on this day. Since I wasn't getting paid to photograph, anything I got right was a bonus to the bride and groom.

I seem to remember a thread where someone recommended that to practice you should go along and double shoot a wedding, so that way no one would be hurt by your mistakes and you could only help by adding nice images to the pot, without the pressures to get anything right.
