Pretty much in-camera metering and look at the LCD (which is often hard to see in the bright sun) and some guestimates on exposure compensation. Usually in AV mode. Some might be manual. The self portraits are at whatever the camera was set to at the time.

Using my meter and the WhiBal card for color. Still not getting the sky included in the photograph. This was shot late in the evening...about 7:30. Almost too late. Light was coming from behind them. Metered off the babies face with the hand held meter.

Kelly,

Contrast range will not enable you to get the sky in good color unless you bring the foreground light value up to Sunny 16 +1. Your meter should show you that easily. The best thing to do here is clone some leaves over the sky that is poking through and get rid of the distracting hot spots.

In the future, also watch out for lens flare that could degrade image saturation.

Kelly, in this case, meter for the sky and add fill flash to bring the models up to the same exposure. Otherwise you have to live with this kind of exposure.

The sky was so uninteresting, that i thought...why bother metering for it? But I look at this and think...what a wasted moment. That blown sky is horrible. Of course, I was restricted to a 580EX...my Metz was at home....grrrrrr.

What would have happened if you moved a foot to the right so that there was only green behind them and the sky was out of the frame?

John's suggestion makes more sense to me that using flash....flash will destroy at least some of the modellling effect of the ambient light , particularly on-camera flash, and I only use it for 'hopeless" cases. Cheers...Bob

Testing the sunny 16 rule. Surprsingly, my LCD panel indicated that the white jacket was blown...I think...I would have to go back and double check. But notice the blue sky peeking through the background. I wish there was a better way to see the LCD panel. I have to run to the shade, cover and peek. This was the last wedding that I plan on video taping for hire, but of course, I had my camera on hand in order to do some tests. It was a great way to play without stress.

Trying to use manual, expose for the blue sky, and use fill flash to help bride and groom. Duh. They were facing the sun. Why would I use fill flash? Except look at their eyes. Is this a hopeless situation when trying to get their eyes filled with light?

That's why you'd use fill flash...to fill in shadows on eyes....etc....

Not a hopeless situation at all. Your 580 should be able to fill that in no problem. Depending on the distance of course....

I just recently realized this when I took some falls shots. It said the water was just barley blown by the blinking, but it was actually at about 245-250 when I checked it in PS. That is a great piece of info and has caused me to underexpose many a times

Kelly, Nice work on your recent efforts. TUff lighting conditions make "limited time" photography brutal dude!!
