i believe that all cameras will have the ability to change the crop factor from ff to say 3x.
They have this, it's called digital zoom. But I think you're on to something - how about variable aspect ratios?

i was thinking of expanding the high speed crop the nikon d2x has. it goes from a 12mp 1.5 crop to a 8mp 2x crop. this will allow people to change dof, aspect ratios and a whole lot more. lets say you can change the size of your sensor from .75 to 3x at settings like .75, .85, .95, FF, 1.25, 1.3, 1.5, 1.66, 1.75, 2, 2.25, 2.3, 2.5, 2.66, 2.75, 3.0. it would be a pretty cool thing would it not? a 28-70 f2.8 becomes a 21mm-225mm effective fov.

i am not talking about digital zoom, but changing the format of the sensor.

I gotcha now. Something like 5 fps in full res, 15 fps in 1.5 crop mode, etc.
