Default Low cost image stabilization

Image stabilization comes in several forms.* I don't mean sensors mounted on springs or lenses with little motors in them to offset camera shake.* I mean mounting the camera/lens on an inexpensive stick to offset camera shake.* In other words, monopods.

I shot two retail stores for ad copy recently... a western wear shop and a water emporium.* I didn't think a flash would flatter either set of products, but wanted to keep ISO below 800 to avoid grain.* That meant slow shutter speeds, but neither store was tripod-friendly, due to narrow aisles and customer flow.* So I gave it a try with my monopod, which I've now equipped with a ball head for the ultimate in flexibility and accessibility.* Here's a few samples.

(28-70/2.8 lens) 1/25s f/4.0 at 42.0mm iso640

(60/2.8 lens) 1/125s f/4.0 at 60.0mm iso640

(28-70/2.8 lens) 1/10s f/4.0 at 28.0mm iso400

(28-70/2.8 lens) 1/20s f/4.0 at 45.0mm iso400

(60/2.8 lens) 1/60s f/5.6 at 60.0mm iso640

(60/2.8 lens) 1/60s f/5.6 at 60.0mm iso640

(60/2.8 lens) 1/60s f/5.6 at 60.0mm iso640

(85/1.4 lens) 1/50s f/2.8 at 85.0mm iso640

Great shots - I was wondering how good a monopod would be as they are highly portable. Another good tip for image stabilization: 50 push-ups every day! I used to shoot scoped rifles and this was a good aid to keeping the cross-hairs on target.

Roger that. I used to shoot competitive service rifle matches... muscle tone make a huge difference in how steady you are.

I agree being in shape helps a lot in handheld shots too, if you are hiking and then a photo opp shows up and your panting hard then the result, a blurry shot. Another point in the large lenses, my 600mm is 13 lbs alone, if you can not hold a 13lb + weight strait out in front of you then you willl not be able to hold a 600mm or a 500mm for that matter. Even with IS
