Can you folks throw out some ideas for me on the best DSLR cameras to look for on the used market--best in terms of value for money. Brand doesn't matter. This is for someone upgrading from a point and shoot.
Appreciate it! __________________

Nikon D1H. Full-fledged pro camera for $500-800, depending on condition and what's included. Batteries suck, but that can be remedied through the use of Lenmar ones with the Nikon caps screwed-on. Add some glass, and you're in business.
Of course, if that someone's upgrading from a point and shoot, I'd be looking at something a little smaller. |

For something less pro..
The D70.. or 350d, depending on your likes. The D70 has shown to be an amazing (and proven) cheaper camera and can be had for $500 or less these days |

Canon 20D or Nikon D70.
The 20D will be slightly higher, probably in the $600+ range for just the body. Slightly higher MP at 8.2MP and better high ISO noise. (and, no, I'm not selling mine) ![]() The Nikon D70 is a great starter for the Nikon line, probably in the sub $500 range for the D70, possibly higher for the D70s. It's "only" a 6MP camera but at this stage, you won't see a big difference. Upgrade to the D80 or D200 later, depending on your direction. Personally, I'd stick with either of those two product lines. Fuji and Sigma's newest are interesting specimens amongst the DSLR market but Minolta showed how a smaller fish in the digital market can flounder and die. Sony saved the Minolta line but I wasn't overly impressed with their intro to the market. The next few years are going to be interesting in the lower end DSLR market. Canon and Nikon, however, are unlikely to go anywhere. |

Haven't used Nikons before, but the Canon 20D is an excellent camera. Have it and still use it. I find it hard to justify selling it after I got the 5D.

Well, it's real cheap now, outputs great files, and you can practically wash the thing under the tap (key word is "practically"). I'd personally take the same money and put it towards a D1H, but I shoot mostly sports, news, and people, where I'd benefit from the speed more than I would the advantages of the E-1.

If you don't need fast fast, then it is about the best one around. This is the "best DSLR deal" thread, and it or the D1H has probably dropped the most in price and held its own. |

Somebody tell me why you wouldn't want to buy into the best camera systems--Canon or Nikon? The camera itself is just the first toe in the water.

What is so "great" about buying a camera like a 20D for $750 when it was originally around $1200? What makes that the "best deal" on the market?

"Best" is a relative term and highly dependant upon the original posters needs and wants.
I really like the E-1, as it is a proven studio camera - rock solid and has great ergos. However, it is not for everyone. Same can be said for Canon and Nikon. Bottom line: It's difficult to answer the question, what is 'best' without first knowing how 'best' is to be defined. |

I understand that "best" is relative, but if you're looking for a system that gives you maximum flexibility, I think you can rank the systems well enough. __________________
