what is a DM filter - PhotoCamel

I recently bought a heap of filters. In this heap there are a DM-1 and a DM-2 filter (from spectralstar).
These filters are made up of two parts: the first part looks like a glass circle with a black circle in the middle, the second part is just the inverse (a large black circle and a small glass circle).

Do you know what these filters are good for, what is the difference between DM1 and DM-2?

I heard of them before, I think. I recall this is to make double exposures with one shot in the middle (small circle) and the main picture around it. You use the glass circles as masks. As far as I can tell it's pointless in digital since you can do much better in PP.

This is from Adorama site (DM-1 filter):

"Description
85mm-105mm Photo only - allows you to superimpose one picture upon another in the masked area. Always use a tripod.

1. Use a tripod and make a manual exposure reading of your first subject. 2. Put the black mask in the holder. 3. Make your exposure. 4. Reset your shutter release without advancing the film (see your camera manual for procedure) 5. Remove the black mask and set the reading for your second subject. 6. Put the transparent mask into the holder in the exact same position as the black mask. 7. Make your exposure. 8. The effect will work best at f/8-f/11 with standard lens and over f/11 with a telephoto lens.

System "A" for lenses between 36 and 62 mm in diameter is recommended for focal length over 35 mm"

Sounds very complicated. And it stands for Double Mask. It is sold for $3.95...I wonder why

Wel 2x3.95 and a some 15 other filters, i think i made a good bargain for 10 euro's.
