Default Photo Processing / Storage / Not Sure Help?

I have been taking a lot o digital photos over the pat two years and prior to that 35mm that I have now transfered to digital. My questions are as follows:
1. When I am done shooting should I put the photo's into folders such as originals, edited. etc
2. Should I rename the files with a new name for the catalog of keepers?
3. I make backups on CD & DVD plus a copy on a external hard drive is this enough?
4. I catalog my photos in elements 5.0 I also have photoshop CS which has bridge for the catalog program which would be better to use? Is the bridge program complicated to use or over kill for a non professional.
5. I currently store all the photos I take in a file by month. I then copy the ones I feel are exceptional to a folder called portfolio I leave the others in their monthly folders.
I feel overwelemed please help with some tips I want to start sharing my photos.
