This is some interesting reading. Photo Attorney: "Reasonable Expectation of Privacy Issues" for Photographers
Since license plates are basically for "public" viewing, I would not have an issue taking pictures and using them since there is no expectation of privacy, but I would not submit them for stock photography or use them for monetary gain. I have not spoken with an attorney but I have been doing lots of reading on the use of photos from street photography and I think this issue would fall into that category. __________________

I posted a vanity plate once. But when taking photos of cars, I will try intentionally not to photograph the plate. I don't know the legality of it, but it's personal preference. I won't post a plate.

I honestly don't see how someone could use a license plate to their advantage in a photograph. They are surrounded by them everyday.

Certainly in UK there is no legal problem about posting a picture of a number plate. Once I saw in the readers' column in a magazine a picture of a number plate which read E60NLY which in the film days could mean "E6 only" processing. The reader who submitted the picture made it clear that he had no idea to whom the car belongs. He send the picture just as an interesting number plate and the magazine published it.

I would love to have this area clarified. I shoot time lapse sequences from a car and they have lots of faces and number plates which I dutifully and painfully blur. I do this because Google Street view blurs faces and number plates not because I really know the legalities.
![]() Private property is different, I was once stopped from taking photographs in a shopping centre dining area by the shopping centre management, technically it was private property. In fact McDonald's could legally stop you from taking pictures of your kids at a McDonald's birthday party if they wanted to. Not to mention schools, zoo's, amusement parks etc etc ![]() What about shop & vehicle signs, company logos, advertising signs and artworks? |

Lawry: just to fine tune some of what you, as to Zoo's and Amusement parks , If they stop people from taking pictures in those place how long would they last , since every one wants memories to have and to hold and who does not want photo of zoo's and Park's ::

I started this for one main reason that was try and get some straight
information as to what is right and what is wrong, since our world is changing every minute these days: so the answer is if your in public space and take a photo of a car and post on the web then you have not violated any one's rights : The thought had pop in to my mind , would I be responsible if that item was stolen , then could I be blamed for that happening , [I know It a Long stretch ] But CYA is in my mind Before you jump on this statement , Think carefully of our always changing world ; Who is suing who . |

I do a lot of street photography and the legality of using the pixs either on Facebook or in exhibitions always poses the legality of such actions in south Africa. To date I have not pursued this but need to do so.
