I think my British ancestry for my fair skin. It takes me only a short time to turn red. Sunscreen, long sleeves, long pants, and a wide brimmed hat are my outdoor daily wear, regardless of the temperature.

When I owned a sailboat the answer lots and lots of waterproof sports type sun block and an Ultimate Hat. I still got sunburned, just not to the extent that I looked like a nicely cooked and delicious lobster.

I tan fast, and have only burnt twice -- once when I fell asleep outside, and once when sailing. I had no idea how much UV light was reflected by water.

Turns out that water isn't an especially good reflector of UV light. However, pleasure boaters go out on bright sunshiny days and are out in the sun when it is high in the sky and they stay out in the sun for a long time. They may also get a fair amount of reflected light from the sails, deck, or exterior cabin walls. Furthermore, water has this nasty tendency to wash off sunscreen. As a ressult, the boaters' skin may be fried extra crispy by the time they come back in.

Water does not have the be an effective reflector to provide more UV radiation than one would ordinarily receive. What the water does scatter and both directly and indirectly reflect in your direction is more than what you would receive say than if you were in the shade, in house, or even sitting is a large grass park. Thus you receive more UV than normal and are more inclined to sunburn and possible skin damage.

I'm half Brit (on my mother's side - Welsh from Griffith and English from Wilkinson), But as long as I'm careful to work into it, I rarely have trouble with sunburn. I lived in Colorado for 39 years at a mile and more above sea level, so I have some idea of what the sun can do. As an avid golfer, I've spent a lot of time in the sun at a mile above sea level. I've also spent days on the water at more than 8000 feet elevation, and spent many days hiking in shorts and t-shirt at up to 12,000 - 13,000 feet. Now I live on the beach in the sunny Bahamas. If I couldn't deal with sun without long sleeves and slacks, I'd die here.

I do often wear a wide brim had when I spend time in the sun, but that is my main concession. We try to do most of our yard work in the morning, and limit our swimming and beach outings to after 2 PM. That way we can spend a lot of time outdoors without a lot of concern for the sun.
