What do I do?
Shipping box was full of un-filled air bladders; not popped, but never filled. It's like throwing ten baggies in a box. The box itself was cut with a razor from end to end through the tape, no tape was left connected. It arrived "open box" with the flaps up on my doorstep. ANd of course Nikon doesn't have any kind of seal on the D800 box, so I have no way of knowing if it was opened. Do I trust it? The serial #s match from box to register form to chasis, but still, do you trust a camera that went from the retailer to your door in an open box? And why did the person who opened my package do it? Why did amazon's shipping department not put in any foam or peanuts? WHy did they put in un-inflated bladders? Why did someone between AMazon and my door cut the tape and open the box all the way, (and not even bother to reseal it). Why did the UPS guy run away after tossing it on the doorstep even though he was supposed to ask for a signature? Why did UPS deliver an item in an open box? I'm frustrated beyond belief. I asked for an RMA, but amazon says it could be another 4 months before I get a replacement. Would you trust the unit and keep it? Thanks Josh __________________

I'll never know what adventures the camera had while on it's way to me. DId people at every stop take it out and push all the buttons? DId people take pictures with it?
Why can't nikon use some kind of sticker or seal on their damn boxes so customers have at least some amount of reassurance that their shit hasn't been touched and is really "new". ah, so angry. BTW compared to my D300 this thing feels pretty flimsy. The buttons are mushy and the on/off collar is thin and flimsy. Anyone else notice how cheap and plasticky the D800 feels compared to an old D300? DId nikon get cheap with their new bodies? The knobs and dials are thin cheap malleable plastic, it's got a very low-end consumer feel to all the controls. For $3,000 I was actually expecting higher quality and more rigidity than my $2000 D300. ug, Im just let down all around today by this camera purchase. |

Wow, that is awful. Nobody can be expected to be unmoved when such a significant investment is treated that way.
It may be simplest for your peace of mind to go through with the RMA, and let Amazon know how you feel with the expectation that they'll do *something* to make it up to you in *some* way. Or maybe there's a way to go through Nikon -- maybe if you complained they'd agree to have a service center check it out free of charge. Really hope somebody owns up their mistake and makes it right for you. |

Thanks
![]() I just can't figure out "why". WHy would someone open my box? If the camera was missing, the "why" is answered, they opened my box to steal the camera. But everything inside the product box is in-tact, (as far as I know). And why fill the box with new bladders and not inflate them. /sad panda And even sadder is that the build quality just seems so much cheaper than the D100 D300 D700 series. It's liek they've switched to cheaper knobs and buttons since 2009. ALso the flashhead is yellow, my D300 is white. So many things I will now question about this camera. ![]() |

If you're not happy with it Josh, you should return it. I'm sure you will find another one that will be more satisfactory to you. That is a lot of coin to spend on a camera with which you are less than satisfied.

But you don't seem to be satisfied with the build quality either Josh. Perhaps this model is not for you? Would you be happier with a D700?

I have to take the bad with the good. The good being all the new innovations and improvements in image quality, and the bad being cheap consumer plasticky dials and levers. I've done some test shots with it, and MAN IS IT FASTER than my D300. With the 24-70 f/2.8 AFS lens on it OMG it focuses so fast. So the bad comes with a lot more good. The problem is the more I shoot with it the less I'm going to want to give it back. Maybe I'll use it for the full 30 days the RMA process allows. Cheers Josh |

That's what would burn me!
One thing, you should take a look at the Exif data on the first image you shot with it and check the shutter release count. Nikon resets them to zero when they are boxed... You might also want to check various setup options to see if they are the defaults, or if someone has been fiddling with it there too. __________________
