Default Camera help please

I have a friend that wants to buy his wife a point and shoot type digital camera for Christmas. I've never wanted a point and shoot digital, so I know almost nothing about them, other than bad shutter lag making for not so good pictures. What camera's has the best shutter lag, or the lack of it? What's the best bang for the buck? He wants her to be able to get good photo's with out going to a SLR.

Thanks
Allen

You might want to check http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html out. There are several cameras reviewed and this link goes to there choice of the best. One think I would recommend is that your friend choose a camera with a rangefinder, rather than one which forces the user to rely on the LCD screen, it will make for a more stable camera shooting position

When someone finds a portable digital camera that acts like a "real camera," please let me know.

I hate that shutter lag stuff.

Thanks everyone. Looks like the Fujifilm FinePix F31fd, just may be what he is looking for.
