Default Filter or not?

* * I haven't shot much landscape, but did shoot a little when I had my 35mm. When I shot fall photo's I used a filter like this, and had some great results.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...ghType=search* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

* *I'm going to the mountains in a few days, and now that I'm shooting digital, would it give the same affects with my digital shots, that it did with my 35mm shots? I'll have to buy one to fit my lens I have now, but wanted to know if it will give me what I'm looking for.

Thanks
Allen

Color shifts can be done in an image editor, and can be done with more precision, so not many digital users utilize them. There's nothing wrong with using one if you prefer that method, as long as it's a high quality filter like the one in the link.

Hi Allen Crystal Imaging!

The filter you link to will work on a digital like on a film camera, but I think you wil find this filter much more versatile

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...goryNavigation

..and $10 cheaper, too!

...just follow your heart and do what you prefer...

...but nice to know some alternatives

...*my* €0.02...

Kindest regards!

Good one! I didn't realize how reasonable Elements was. No wonder everyone gripes about Photoshop.

...I have been using Elements from 2.0 (shipped w/ my 10D) till 5.0, 5.0 is a real beauty

(I also use PhaseOne Capture One LE since then (1.3.1, now 3.7.5 ), which gives me 'levels' and 'curves' in the -very good- RAW conversion, almost all the CS2 tools for ~€/$200 )

The 'original tip' came from Mr. Petteri Sulonen:

quote:

And, of course, while a RAW workflow program will take over some of the functions of Photoshop, you'll still need a photo editor. However, if you don't have Photoshop, and are editing your pictures with Photoshop Elements, it is my very strong and considered opinion that your money is better spent on, say, CaptureOne DSLR than the full Photoshop CS. The RAW workflow program will take over most of the functions the full Photoshop provides over CS (e.g. curves manipulation, 16-bit manipulation, finely controlled sharpening), so Elements will get you a great deal further.

I'm actually a fan of Mr. Petteri. He takes an interesting point of view on most things.

Hi again Allen,

What I like about PSE5.0 is the added tools/gimmicks (curves, magic extraction brush, magic selection tool, skin tone enhancer, B+W conversion, lens adjustment, etc) but especially the fact that it doesn't only look smoother (oh bother ), but it actually feels much smoother in use than PSE3.0 or PSE4.0, on *all* 'my' computers (see below )

...but if you have PSE3.0, and are not in a 'luxury' position like me (I test software for work ) upgrading to PSE5.0 mhhh....

...for what you might want it to do (the 'warming' filter effect of your original question ) PSE3.0 should suffice...

and if you use a Canon DSLR, you could also shoot RAW and experiment with the 'landscape picture style' in DigitalPhotoProfessional

...just *my* €0.02 again,

Kindest regards,

Max@Home

Allen,
If you don't have PS, you can also try the freeware Opanda filter.

Interesting filter...

I think if I were to buy a filter for landscape it would be a neutral grad filter. My outside shots tend to suffer from blown skies (its bright over here!).
