Default Why I went to a full frame camera

I did a new blog entry on why I went to a FF camera. I ramble a bit too much in it and also get less than dramatic results in a little test I ran but it may be of some value to people pondering the question of FF or APS for their next camera.

My blog is here:

Time to go to a Full Frame (FF) DSLR – Bob Keenan Photography

5D MkII images on bottom of the ISO comparisons? I think judging by those, that the 7D looks crisper. Noise might be "worse", but it looks sharper....

Just a thought, there is no be all and end all of photographic formats...every format (and I've used from 110 format up to 24"x36" sheet film, the camera is taller than a person) is a compromise between benefits & negatives, and what may be a benefit for one person is a negative for another.

I'm not criticizing your choice, on the other hand it's not right for me (neither is APS)!

I am going through the same situation. My son has offered to purchase "any camera you want" as a retirement gift. I have a 7D with a 15-85, 100 "L" Macro, and a 70-300 "L" (love this lens). Have been debating on waiting for the 5DIII with kit lens and keeping the 7D or jumping in to a 1DIV, selling the 7D and 15-85 then picking up a 24-70 "L". Will be studying your blog. Thanks.

I liked the comparison pictures, but I must say I like the colors better on the 7D.

Clearly, though, the noise is better controlled on the 5dm2.

I'm still a 7D shooter. I pondered this question long and hard myself and decided to go all 7D. I'm sure I will be buying a 5dm3 when it comes out, though.

That's so funny. I used to think I was unique picking up photography right before I retire. Then having a 7D and working up to the FF. My plan WAS to wait till 1Jun. I retire right before that. I will get some $$ for leftover vacation. And there is a decent chance the MkIII will be out there. But the guesses are all over the map so there is no assurance that one will be out then. So I got the 5DMkII now. I still have not picked up the 7D since I got the ff camera. So I don't know what I will do on 1 Jun now with my retirement $$. Probably sell the MkII. Get the III and buy a wide angle prime..... anyhow its a good problem to have and I get to play with the II now.
