Where do you store your lenses? Where should you store them?

Anywhere and everywhere...
Actually, I keep 'em in various forms of protection (usually bags/cases) in a closet. In Taipei, my dad's family kept their gear inside a giant dessicator due to the humidity, but that's not a problem here. |

I keep mine in my camera bag which stays in my bedroom or office room. Back-up equipment that I don't use on a regular basis, stay in my camera bag, but I have them individually in a ziplock freezer type bag to be prepared for winter weather. During the winter, I keep everything in my camera bag in a freezer bag wrapped up securly to protect it from bad weather and the changes from inside warm car to outside cold air and vice versa.

Heat and humidity are problems in some parts of the world and very serious in tropical areas. As a collector with thousands of pieces, (cameras, lenses, images, etc.) I've learned that the best is a cool (relatively) and dry place where possible. At home I store my lenses, without caps, on shelves where they get some natural light and mold/mildew/fungus will never build up. If that isn't possible then store them in a dry space or container (anything will work) with some silica gel that can be recharged occasionally.

My lenses aren't at rest long enough to "store" them - they live in different cases, bags and packs depending on what the job calls for (or how far away it is, or how I'm getting there). I do, however, keep bags of silica gel in all of the afrementioned cases, bags and packs "just because" it's that much more moisture protection.

All over the place. Most of my cameras and lenses have a home in a cabinet in the studio but some are in my bag, some on top of a roll-around tool cart, there's one here on my desk... with the damn filter off.
Where I don't store them is in a car, near a kitchen, near kids or near HVAC vents. Chip |

Australo-Austro-Singapore Camel here!
When I settled down in tropical Singapore, my F2 was with me. I kept it in one of those aluminium containers with silica gel in it. After not using it for a couple of weeks, moulds started to grow just about everywhere. Lens. Camera. Even the leather belt. That was a somewhat nasty experience. I rushed to my trusted camera shop and they took my lenses for cleaning. Singaporeans are experts on this! If the moulds don't linger too long, the lenses can be and in fact were restored. It was time to buy a drying cabinet. Silica gel doesn't do anything in tropical climates. The way to go is an air conditioned cabinet. A little peltier element condenses the humidity to an adjustable level. I keep it at roughly 45% rel. H. Those cabinets cost around 99 SGD, which is much cheaper than having your lenses cleaned ![]() I always recommend the use of a dry cabinet in humid climates, since my experience. One of my colleagues at work has moulds grow inside the LCD on her digital camera. In Singlish: Don't Play Play! Sean. |
