Thanks folks, it was a fun contest.
In the other thread about the contest someone suggested that they would like to see the "before" shot(s) that were used to make the final HDR image. As a reponse to that request I have posted a composite of the five images below. My photo of "Sunrise on Haleakala", on the island of Maui, Hawaii was a five image sequence that I ran through the trial version of Photomatix. The composite sequence runs from left to right and top to bottom -2, -1, 0, +1, +2. I had a bit of trouble with the shrub in the right foreground as it was quite windy. I let Photomatix attempt to reduce the ghosting artifacts and it did reduce them somewhat. ![]() |

Bob has set a nice example, are there more people willing to share their original images?

sure.
composites: 5 exposures -2 to +2 taken with my 100 dollar wal-mart canon digital POS. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i used photoshop CS3 for the HDR merge and skipped the tone mapping (opting for standard adjustments) and ended up with this: ![]() in retrospect, i might not have cropped quite as much. and i would have realigned the horizon line a bit. ![]() |

When you say hand held, do you mean without leaning on a rail or bracing yourself somehow. You must have used the bracketing feature. However you did it, You did a great job. |

This was taken by using bracketing taking a deep breath and hold... I watch too much Biathlon.... I'm too lazy to carry a tripod although I have just invested in a monopod and I've taken a few using it recently with it so i'll post up in the HDR forum.

Congratulations on great wins! Very nice photos. I like to see these examples. I'd like to learn how to do this in PS CS2. I have tried it via a tutorial but still haven't been able to get it to work. For some reason, I get a message giving me some reason why I can't use the images. Anymore examples or advice to share from those more experienced would be grrrreat!

easy bake instructions:
in cs2, open the files that you want to merge. (each of your different exposures) don't alter them yet, just open them. in cs2 go to file>automate>merge to HDR a dialogue will pop up...select "use open images" if you have other files that are open that you don't want, you can remove them by highlighting them and hitting the remove button. make sure "align source images is checked." if you have any files that have been altered and not saved, you will get an error message saying that files cannot be used unless saved. click ok or enter (whatever that button says) and it should start working on your HDR composite...sometimes it takes a bit. once you have created your HDR composite, you will need to go to image>mode>16bit to start using most of your adjustment controls. 32 bit locks most of the good stuff. you can use 8 bit too, but i usually wait to go to 8 bit when i have finished editing and am optimizing for save. good luck! ![]() (if you have any questions, please feel free to send a note. always glad to help.) __________________
