I'm posting this for Uncle Frank, the winner of contest for best flower photo, since he's going away for a bit and needs someone else to manage the contest. Here's what he says:
============ NEW CONTEST! I've found out my prize for winning the "Your Best Flower Picture" contest was a bumper sticker, and my punishment is having to come up with the theme for the next contest -lol. So, here's the game: CAPTURING KINETIC ENERGY Most action photography consists of "freezing" a moving subject, but the results can be more striking if you capture the motion as well as the moment. The winner of this contest will present the composition that best incorporates motion as a design element. My example is a shot I took of a hovering hummingbird that stopped the body, but not the wings. ![]() Panning shots would be excellent for this contest, and I'd enter one if I wasn't so bad at it. Good luck, as I hear Jay is going to award an amazing prize to the winner! ============ We'll run this for 14 days. Good luck! __________________

Thanks for volunteering to run the contest while I'm on holiday, Jay
!* Note that the sample I included in the lead post is not my entry.* I want to come up with something new this time. |

Kevin, that is an awesome shot!!! I love the colors but the sense of movement with the handle bars frozen in time - breathtaking!!
Uncle Frank, an awesome image as well.. Beautiful Hummingbird and I love how the wings are still in motion with the rest as clear as a bell.. THe eagle and the horse ones are nice too. I would like to see more of the horse in the frame. THe eagle is captured in a nice setting of lovely tones and moody lighting.. Nice work!! Michele |

I am going to attempt this contest, even though I am a novice with DSLR. I believe my photo is of a damselfly, not a dragonfly and the opposite wing is in motion. I lucked out with this one. I just hope I have uploaded the photo and this post goes to the correct place as I am somewhat clueless as to the workings of this board :

This duck flew past while I was photographing plants . My D70 reacted pretty quickly when I spun round and tried to pan the shot .
Maybe it is just me but this topic is giving me motion sickness ... ![]() |

I just found this forum today and this contest.* I have a panning shot that I took while at breakfast one morning at the Saratoga Flat track of a horse working out.* I loved it so much that I framed it for hanging in my house.

Welcome to the board Joe - hope you will stick around and contribute. This shot is terrific. I like how you've captured the motion in the legs but got the torso and rider frozen. Very good panning technique.
