Thanks Dakota I really appreciate the comment. It was a difficult shot because the snow was so bright. Believe it or not I have always struggled taking pictures with snow all around. It really fools the metering on any camera. I think I got the hang of it now, lots of Exposure Compensation and spot metering.

Nice shot you did well. Your meter tries to turn the white snow the same color as an 18% gray card. The general rule I use is I meter as usual and open 1-2 stops with 1.5 stops being good most the time. If you have lots of snow or bright sun you will open it up a bit more. It sounds wrong but what is happening is the camera tries to make the snow 18% gray and the brighter it is the more the camera ends up under exposing. You know this so ignore the meter and set your exposure compensation or compensate manually by 1.5 stops and check your histogram. Stop up or down a bit if needed or adjust a bit in post processing.

short 5 - all the shots are super nice, but I especially like yours. We have two new foals (one a paint with tons of color!) that begged to be photographed, but living in the brown dirt of AZ leaves a lot to be desired in the way of a background.
