A kinder, gentler version of ancient Rome. I seriously doubt that modern Europeans, especially the soldiers, would tolerate too much authenticity; those guys worked and played ROUGH and the penalties were harsh. The standard penalty for losing a battle included executing one tenth of the (surviving) combatants, from which we get our word "decimated."
