I have a complete Nikon rig but my Pentax K1000 is so groovy
I got irate that Nikon intentionally disables the metering of manual focus lenses on their consumer level dSLR - so mad I that I ordered a Pentax K100D ![]() Any Pentax dSLR can use any M42 or K-mount lens manufactured since 1949 (the M42 requires an inexpensive adapter) The lenses are fun and cheap to collect and use, I get them for like $10 and $20 per lens ![]() I have : 28/2.8 50/1.7 135/2.8 80-200/4 500/8 They are all nice metal and glass manual focus lenses most made in Japan ![]() The lot is en route right now but soon I'll have some example pics ![]() I used to own M42 lenses and shoot them adapted on a Canon, but I always wanted to try a Pentax. The K100D was only $210 (shipped) and adds shake reduction to any lens ![]() Long live Pentax ! |

Careful with off brand adapters as they can get stuck if the retaining spring breaks. I think you know Hin but here is his take on the adapters in case I'm mistaken. Hin's blog |

The 500/8 is off brand, Beroflex 500mm
I got the Beroflex 500/8 and a 3X teleconverter for $30 shipped I got a Rokinon X2 teleconverter with a Rokinon 28/2.8 for $18 shipped This means I can go 500mm, 1000mm, or 1500mm for $48 as long as I have a camera that meters manual lenses. I could have gotten a X2 teleconverter compatible with my Nikon camera for $300, that coupled with my 200mm lens would get me to 400mm The choice was simple, for this project I'd just get another camera. I like messing around with cameras and lenses anyway. So I bought the Pentax K100D - NO WAY JOSE ! I attached a 50/1.7 Vivitar "K mount" lens I already had to it, I coudln't manually focus while staring through that dim penta-mirror viewfinder. It's darker than my Nikon D40 which is only compatible with AF lenses! So I am getting rid of that K100D and I have already ordered the Pentax *ist DS pronounced Pentax issed DS or just "DS" for short The "DS" has a bright glass penta-prism and can be used for manual lenses ![]() Most of the lenses and the camera are in the mail, when they get here I'll be able to post some reviews. I bought a German made 50/1.8 "Pentacon" lens but it arrived with fungus - I'll probably have more arrive with fungus but for the price I can't complain. I will have the fungus ones cleaned by : Charles S. Fallis 2532 Keagy Road Salem, VA 24153 FallisPhoto [at] aol [dot] com He cleaned my medium format lens, Zeiss Biometar 80/2.8, I have that adapted to "K mount" ![]() ![]() I have a lot of fun messing around with manual lenses ![]() Cheers, Craig |

Pentax has today announced a new entry level DSLR named K-x. Basically a K-m replacement but with HD video, 12mp CMOS sensor, that famous K mount and it comes in colors....some 100+ grip/body combinations (in Japan only but red, white, blue and black everywhere else).
Matching colored kit lenses too. Kit price is around $650US. Here's a link: Pentax K-x Hands On Preview | neutralday Better get that good glass before the prices zoom. ![]() |

Though I shoot Pentax, I don't think we need a dedicated board - yet. PC is fairly brand independend and the strength of the community lies in discussing photography, not technology. There are already well-established Pentax communities on the web, which cover the more specific aspects of Pentax equipement knowledgeable and in-depth. That is at least my personal opinion. Though I confess, seeig dedicated CaNiOly...-boards all the time can be a frustrating experience.

It's a fine question. We have Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Panasonic, Fuji Forum, and Sony. Other than Pentax, which big player is missing?
I guess we'd have to compare their net worth or some accounting number? To discover which camera companies are big? |

To measure how big a vendor is, the best numbers are either the market-share in units or value for digital cameras. The company's net worth isn't such a useful criteria, because many manufacturers like HP, Sony, Canon or Panasonic also do other things beside selling photographic gear and cameras are just a small part of their business. You saw a negative Pentax thread? Who could dislike the company that crams the most features for the least money and includes ultimate backwards compatibility? I knew a lot didn't use Pentax but it's hard to imagine a negative thread about them ... They are so virtuous
