Default Sigma 10-20 mm F-4-5.6 EX DC HSM

I have heard good things about this lens and currently, it is at the top of my Christmas list.
However, I (and at least one other Camel) would like to hear the pros and cons of this piece of glass.

Intended use on a Nikon D-70S.

Thanks

Hi, I use mine on a D70s and a D80.
The pros: (IMHO)
* Good solid build
* Fantastic depth of field, bringing a new dimension to landscape photography (and interiors)
* Reasonable price for a lens of this quality
* Silent motor
* Quick autofocus (doesn't have too far to travel)
* Good minimum focusing distance (9")
I love mine, possibly the best lens I own.

The cons: again IMHO
* I have still to find one
(Only thing to watch out for is verticals at close subject distances - but this is not aimed at this lens, just something to consider with an ultra wide-angle lens)

Hope this was of some benefit.
Rick

With mine on Canon bodies I have experienced vignetting and distortion at the edges of the images. These were mostly interior shots where lighting was not optimal.

Outdoors it has done well. However I had some stock photo submissions rejected due to higher than acceptable artifacts even though they were shot in RAW. I'm not necessarily blaming the lens for that, as it could have been my fault somewhere.

I'm with Ricky on this one. However I find with internals if I keep it at 12mm or longer i have far less corrections to make on distortions than at its widest end.

So I am considering this very lens. I was about to buy the Nikon 10-24mm but it is expensive for what it is. While I have no problem paying top dollar for anything of quality I have to question if (aside from the name) it is worth the price. The Sigma gives me a good alternative at a very good price. But I have never owned a Sigma.

The Sigma performs nicely on my Pentax cameras (comparable sensor to Nikon D300). I tend to use it at f/8 to f/11, which seems to be the "sweet spot" of the lens. Not a big deal with such short focal lengthes. For indoors use it is a bit on the slow side and I prefer faster primes, but for landscapes, cityscapes etc. it is a fantastic bargain with a very good image quality. There is some falloff in sharpness towards the edges, but if you stick to the optimum aperture range, it is neglgible.

The build quality of the lens is very good, silent focusing is very nice, and it can even take a few bangs and hits not too badly. Shooting outdoors at f/8-f/11 gets you very sharp results, I only wish it was faster indoors.

The nice thing also it that for $200 more you can get the new one a constant f/3.5!!! I want to sell mine now and get that one. lol

I would wait with that investment, until the optical performance of the successor is clear. The faster max. aperture looks teasing on paper, but whether the lens is as good as the old one, remains to be seen (literally).

I think you will love it. With a crop cam, you can not get the equivalent FOV with any other lens, at this price and quality without looking in a fisheye lens. At least on a Canon mount. I know the EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-5.6 USM exists, but at $200 more, I would opt for the f/3.5 constant, provided as the other poster said, the IQ is up to par.

Yes I did receive mine and I love it. Shooting outside it has very little or no distorition and is sharp and is very quiet when focusing. I think if you try it you will like it. The first time I used it I did some night shots and was very pleased.

cool thanks for the info.... sorry for another noob question but what would be the diff between the newer version and the actual cannon like this: Canon | EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens | 9518A002 the price difference is only about 100 bucks...

I have never seen or even heard of this lens till I read your post. If I would comment it would on this it would be pure speculation.
