Let's see, now we have Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Sony Pro Cams and Olympus E-3......all ficticious characters?

O.K. after selling of most of my C&N along with most of the lenses I've been researching the current crop of 10 MP cameras with the intent of adding either a pro or semi-pro body that will utilize the same lenses.

My evaluation as follows:
1...the Nikon D80 is a fine camera but lacks some of the features of the others
2...the XTi Canon in order to have shake reduction dictates some rather expensive lens.
3...Love the Pentax (Samsung) body and features but it looks like no pro body in the near future.
4...The Oly E-510 looks promising with the E-3 due maybe in my conscious lifetime. Crop factor is an issue though.
5...Sony Alpha is attractive because of the ability to use K/M lenses and the new Sony Pro cameras if the rumors are at least 90% true is a killer.

The one thing that occured to me today is it isn't really worth much worry because the worst you can do is to dislike your choice and sell it off for maybe a 10 to 15% loss, big deal.
I will wait an see what the Oly and Sony pro cameras look like in person thank you.

Latest reports are saying Sony's new Alpha(s) will be announced next week Sept 5 or 6th. Hope they match Nikon's & Canon's latest announcements.

The new "semi-official" announcement directly from Sony says it will be introduced to the public on Sept. 17th. according to David Kilpatrick on DPR..............evidently has a direct relationship with Sony?

Seems like a good camera. As a KM shooter, I'd buy it. I fell in love with the 7D, didn't like the 5D and A100 as much. The A700 looks pretty solid, but as someone used to the 7D, I just wish it had the other knob for adjustments.

You get past that really quick! I have a 7D and the A700 and although I still catch myself reaching for the Exp Comp knob - it's something I will get over very quickly. The Quick Nav screen makes things so easy to change that you don't think about the missing knobs, etc. Almost everything is accessible through the Quick Nav so you don't have to dig around in menus trying to find what you're looking for (like on the 5D).

It's an awesome camera!

Stick around long enough and Sony will use blu-ray discs for memory chips and shoot continuous in beta format and change the accessory shoe to fit a bubble level with a SONY logo in it instead of a drop of liquid. Its only just begun so I feel certain Dimitri is still withholding is order for two.

Tom

PS. Rumor has it the latest model uses AVaio computer to archive the image from the sensor.

Bob, i'm hoping so. I've been thinking about getting the A700 as a gift to myself when I get home.

All I can say is that I have had the A100 for 3 months now, and while I haven't had the opportunity (read money) to try other optins (Nikon, Pentax, etc.), I am really happy with the choice that I made. Easy to use, comfortable to hold, buttons where even someone as untecky as me can get to and use them - all around, very nice. The added bonus is I was previously a Minolta film camera user, along with my folks, so I've had access to a lot of great lenses. I've had a few friends try out the equiment and they were impressed. Work for Sony? No.

I got the VC grip for my A700 last week - really improves the balance and feel of the camera (IMO) especially when handholding with a longer lens. I've used grips on my cameras since 1998 and don't feel comfortable without one - so glad Sony made one available so soon.
