I might not be the best to answer this, but here is my two cents. I use a Nikon D70s, and have had a D50 also. I love them. My neighbor who I go and shoot with just got the Pentax K10, and boy, let me tell you, if I didn't have such an investment in the Nikons, or was looking to buy one to start with, I would seriously consider that Pentax. It feels good, has good feel for controls, and the weather sealing and IS it has makes it very attractive. Were the pictures that much greater then the Nikon, not to me, they were about the same. But some of the body features made the Pentax desirable. Hope that helps. I say shoot with what you know, and to heck with anyone who tells you it is not as good as such and such a brand. They just might be jealous of your camera is all.

Pentax is better at some things than Nikon or Canon or Olympus or....

Others are better at some things than Pentax is.

Are the images better? Is the feel better? Do you have a bag full of Pentax lenses or flashes? Will they work with a Nikon or Canon?

The Pentax K10 looks like a great tool, and doesn't have a bad reputation. Why would you NOT get it is more like the question. If I were you, I'd look at it and get one in your hands and play with it. It will feel like a Pentax, and a Nikon or Canon will feel like something else. Do you want that "odd" feeling?

Whoa! I had this same view of a Bananna Spider from the seat of a motorcycle while riding through the woods... it caused a sudden dismount and luckily, nothing bruised worse than my ego.

I love my Pentax Spotmatics and Takumar glass... for 38 years

It would be my suggestion that unless there is some compelling reason to move away from Pentax stick with it. It sounds like you already have some Pentax mount glass and are happy with the results. So unless you want to re-outfit your bag I again say unless there is a compelling reason to move away from Pentax then don't.

When in doubt do what your gut tells you to do.

If you have been happy with Pentax and like the new camera then stick with it, specially if you have lots of lenses?
Why go to the expense of building another system when you already have one.

There are few photogs around that can stretch the technology of their camera, no matter what the brand.

So I wouldn't be too worried about what others think, they probably aren't using their own cameras to their full potential.

Just show them good shots and maybe you could convert a few of them.

Regards,

Peter

PS. My first SLR was a Pentax, an SF7. I loved that camera

as long as you can shoot as fast as you need and you get big enough pictures for your use, the brand doesn't matter one bit. buy some lights instead of a new camera gives you way more bang for the buck!

Canon and Nikon are great brands, take great shots.

But so does my Pentax K10D, and the image stabilization works with lenses that don't cost more than my camera! (I am often shooting from moving trains, or while on the move with kids, or just too lazy to use a tripod). Also, I can hop out and take a quick set of pics with my K10D even in the rain, without having to do more than wipe it off. Never did that with my Canon! As I only had a couple of lenses for my Canon, and an add-on flash, the image stabilization and weather sealing sold me on the Pentax enough to invest in new lenses and flash unit.

I still like our Canon Digital Rebel, which my wife uses now instead of film. I may even get it converted to shoot infra-red or for astronomy one of these days. But I love my K10D!

Peculiar? All the above posts regarding the attributes of the K10D but no mention of what I consider to be the one primary reason I would buy one. I had the opportunity to handle one (actually the Samsung GX10 but the same camera) today in a store and the one thing that impressed me the most compared to several other new brands of DSLR's was the VIEWFINDER. Man, it was almost like returning to one of my 35 mm SLR's.

Yeah, I hate having to post in the 'other' forums. Oh well! I am a happy Pentax user, and with my new K10D on its way, I will be having to much fun taking pics. But on the other hand, I do use a Canon at work. But that is work, taking boring product shots. I use my Pentax for the fun stuff!

He-he, I had to laugh at the title of this thread ... I used to have it as part of my Flickr screen name.

I have had Nikon's and Pentax's since the mid 70's, and still own both but mostly film camera's up until somewhat recently, in as much as time flies by now. First digital was a 2.?mp Nikon Coolpix about 2 years ago maybe. Have/had Canon's as well. Sold a D1 (that I didn't like much) and S3-IS (eh, it was okay) to help finance the K10D I got in June. I cannot say how much I like this camera, and am very pleased with my decision although I don't get to use my SLR's/DSLR as much. At the time I was saving for a D200 (which I still may get ... someday, or the new D300, or a Fuji S5 ... lol ...), but decided on the K10D instead and for now.

I too believe in different camera's for different purposes, for whatever task is at hand. It will be hard to find one that will do it all, if such a camera exists. I don't believe it does. Example; I use a Canon P&S for 'street' shooting, just because that is what works for me in that scenario.

So you should use whatever you want, whatever pleases you. What others say matters not. All the bickering about who's gear is better and who's isn't is really pretty silly anyway. When it comes down to the bottom line, it's not really about the gear. The gear just helps.

I'm another happy Pentax user. I've been using Pentax for 30 years and have been happy with them. I first choose Pentax because they just seemed easier for me to use. My first camera was an Olympus, nice camera but I spent all my time fumbling around with it. Tried a friend's Pentax Super Program and feel in love immediately because of how easy it was to use. When I first started thinking about a digital SLR, my first thought was Pentax. I read several reviews and everything was about Canon and Nikon. Both great cameras, but I thought I have all this Pentax equipment it would just be more economical to stay with Pentax. The Pentax K10D works great for me. They're rugged, dependable cameras and value wise hard to beat.

Afterall, great photos come from the photographer, not the brand of camera.
