Mythology is a collection of stories by which we order our lives. I believe this has been pointed out in previous discussion about families. We grow up in an enviornment and that environment which helps shape our beliefs. As children we observe and participate in various experiences which range from joy to trauma. Out of those events we take with us truths and perhaps untruths from those events into our future. Likewise the Bible, Koran, Torah, yada yada are all collections of stories about how people responded to different situations. We read a story, ponder its relevance to our life and perhaps a little bit of what we glean goes with us. Most of the stories in sacred text find someone needing 'salvation' , eternal or immediate. And of course each text supplies an ultimate and an intermediate figure to take care of that. Sometimes the figure is divine and sometimes it is our neighbor. Even movies reflect this theme, Gotham is under seige by the Joker and Batman becomes the salvation or deliverance. Now to get to a point lol; all of us play various roles in the mystery of life. Sometimes we are the failure, the traumatized, the victim, the sinner. And other times we are the saint, the one who brings hope, and some degree of deliverance or salvation. To use a Christian term, we are God Incarnate - we become God's love, hands, hugs, resources ect. So in a sense we are all human and divine living our lives based on a series of stories which constitute our life's story. I choose to be a Christian, not because I can, or even want to prove divine creation or anything else as a concrete point. I have made my choice based on the fact that those particular stories resonate with my life and in the reading and studying of them, I can navigate the way or path I feel is best for my life. While I am a Christian, I am also somewhat of a universalist believing the mythology I follow isn't necessarily that which will resonante with others. Therefore every person can choose from any number of paths and find truth for their life. Now I'm going to eat black-eyed peas
Smartest, most astute post "evah"!!!!! Padre, you are my type of guy.

I guess the part that bugs me the most, is the IMPOSSING stuff. I mean, I'm fine if someone wants to think that God sat down and wrote the Bible, or whatever. I'm honestly glad that folks find comfort in believing that Jesus died for the sins of us all. I don't have a problem with that.

What I have a problem with, is when they infringe on the rest of us. I hate the morality plays. Can't stand them. Especially when they come in as a strickly Christian doctine. After all, all the major no nos are covered by ALL religions. And many of them proceed the Christian ones, so it's not like it's new. You guys don't like it when Muslim tell you how they see things. And believe me, they believe just as strongly as you do. So where is any of this getting us?

So I'm just at the point of "get over yourselves". I mean, go and live your own lives, and don't worry about what's in my brain. I'm still a good person. Quit worrying about my soul. And for God's sake (which every religion seems to believe in) quit fretting about what people are doing in their own little corner of the earth. Go to church. Raise your hands. But get out of everyone's business. You are responsible only for your own actions, and your own soul. Quit worry about me. I'm not worried. I have it covered.

To me, Athiesm has reached "religion" status. They have their own little agenda. No better, IMO of any other "faith" trying to cram their beliefs down our throats.

LOL...that's true. "Not believing" has become its own belief system!

Ok, here is a "new", not so "new" idea.....
Go to your corner....and believe what you want to believe. Feel good about it. Fill your heart and soul with all the good stuff you feel. Know that you are the best person you feel you can be. Embrace all your happy thoughts. Do good stuff for people. Help the less fortunate when you can. Give people the benefit of the doubt that they are doing the best that they know how to.
Get your head around the fact that there are all kinds of faiths that go back to one God. Or many Gods. And know that it's not anyting personal to you, but very personal to that person.
Keep in mind, that even if you don't agree, most people want to do the right thing in life.
Even if the person doesn't agree with your outlook, humankind wants to be kind.

How many stupid wars will we get into about religion are we going to get into? How many people have to die? How LONG is it going to take us to quit worrying about all this STUPID crap? Get this people....you don't have to AGREE with everyone. You can believe all your supposedly weird and wacky crap, and take a crapshoot on whether you go to "heaven" or not.

My problem, is that a VERY SMALL PORTION OF WORLDWIDE RELIGION is telling us ALL what to do. Go about your business, I say. Research your OWN soul. Get out of mine. Quit telling me what I can't, and can do. If you don't like what I have to say, go and shake your head and scroll past. Pray for my soul. But get over yourself.

Thing is, you dont see atheists speaking up except when someone else brings up religion. For an example (and dont take it personally. Its just an example) you will probably never see a thread titled "Ive had it with athiests!" except on a religious message board. Nor will you see billboards that say "Got nobody?" or "Nobody Saves". Or "Santa is the reason for the season".

Ah, but I'm not an athiest. I totally believe in God. I just don't believe in a lot of other stuff....... But that's the good part. At least it is for me. I think there is something out there WAY bigger than me. How could you have eyes and not see that.....however, if someone wants to be Atheist, or Muslim, or Taoist, or Hindu, Jewish, Pagan...on and on and on......I'm good with that. What drives me el nutso, is to have people tell me, "You will burn in hell" because I'm not seeing things exactly like they are.
I hate to see pretty natural photos get all tossed up in moral stuff. The Taliban would be even "more" moral about that stuff. If you can see a girl's ankles, you need to take it to the "private forum". I know there has to be a line somewhere. I do. I get it. But when things get shoved down my tonsils, I freak out about it. Hell, my own avatar should be taken off because I'm showing my bra. God forbid. Scandal!
I live a neo hippy kind of life. I came by it rightously. My parent where hippies. So to me, walking around naked is a natural, beautiful thing. Even when I'm feeling fat or whatever, I know that this is the body God gave me, and he wasn't putting people in Polo shirts back in the day. I don't impose my body on others. But it's not like it's a secret thing either. The people who are invited to my home, will most likely get comfortable. If being in a sweater makes sense because it's cold, they'll be wearing one. If it's hot, and we want to wear nothing, that's good too.
I look at ever single day, simply amazed that the earth is so completely wonderful. I can spend hours looking at a flower and wonder how it came to be. I watch my Koi swim around and wonder what it must be like to be them. I journal alot. I live my little simple life, and I try to mind my own business.
And then, I feel that sometimes, I get blindsided by good intentioned people who insist that I should live my life, their way, in my own home. I can only view certain photos that they declare to be viewable. I should only believe "their way". I should "repent" for questioning things.
I know I'm a good, honest, person. I don't only give money to the homeless, I get my ass out there and pass out food. I recyle. Everything. I grow my own food, and compost my own household waste. I give money to churches (hehe) and mentor battered women. I've never thrown away an article of clothing. It's given to shelters.
Yet, I'm told all the time, it's been shoved down my gullet actually, that I'm not a "Christian" so I'm going to hell.
I'm thinking that if that's the case, I might meet more than a few Christian friends there......

Kindest regards,

I have read at least 20 pages after this question, and didn't really see a serious answer to Max's serious question, so I thought I'd throw my pennies into this very fascinating mix...

I'd say that the NT is neither a firmware upgrade nor an add-on; more of a freeware...the OT is pretty much the history of man's rebellion against God, and the NT is kind of like a working demo of God extending grace and mercy, in spite of that rebellion.

Indeed, the 10 commandments still stand, along with, I think, over 600 other laws. However, they don't apply to those who 'believe'....

And, really, we do choose what we want to believe in life, oftentimes in spite of glaring 'evidence' that may contradict what we 'want' to believe--you know, the notorious 'elephant in the room'...the emperor's new clothes...etc...

Anyway, that's just my viewpoint....couldn't help myself.
I'm impressed with the maturity most posters have displayed on what can be a very divisive subject....well done!
