Default PMs (storage)

I believe in this forum, and probably in most others, there is a 100 PMs storage limit. That's too bad because it would be nice if we can keep those PMs instead of deleting them.

Wish the developers of the software enable us to download the messages to our PCs.

What do you think.

First, I really like your entry in the POTY 2006 thread... beautifully simple, well done.

For PM's, I have a notepad (text only) file that I paste the messages I want to keep into. They're all in a single file and there aren't so many that I can't find one when I want to.

Happy new year.

Chip

Hi Chip, long time no see. So much so I thought about starting a thread asking about you (and Petra). You guys disappeared, or so it seems.

Thanks for the compliment about my photo. I really like that one.

Speaking of which. I really like your photo too, especially how the flower casts a yellow shade on the kid's face.
Is she your daughter.

As for storage, I thought about copy&paste, but that involves a lot of work. It could be made a lot simpler easily by the s/w developers, I think.

Happy New Year Chip.

More often than not, people keep more than they really NEED. I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to any correspondence. If I need it, I'll store it locally (typically links, info I cannot find elsewhere on the www, etc.) similar to Chip's technique (I use a Word doc but same principle). Otherwise, get rid of it.

and "It could be made a lot simpler easily by the s/w developers, I think" is your opinion, not the software developers. What you perceive to be a simple operation may require more complexity on the backend than they feel is worth the effort.

Why don't you just print them to a file? Print in the browser window shows the entire page of PMs.

How difficult it is to transfer text from one place to another. Oh wait, developers are too busy solving world peace issues. Sorry for distracting them.

It's not about "world peace". It's about return on investment, in this case DEVELOPMENT TIME compared to number of actual uses that may occur. If it takes 10 hours to write something, including testing and revisions, for something that is used once a quarter by one person when another alternative is available that takes almost the same amount of time...why bother?

I just did the print to file method on another forum (not enough PMs here). It took less than five minutes...including the time my dog interrupted me to go outside and throw the ball for about two minutes. It's not that difficult.

I know that you can write extensions for SMF. Maybe you can find one and submit it to the mangement for inclusion in the the site software.
