Pic vs. Photo
For some reason I find calling a photo a "pic" is somewhat degrading/not appropriate. Very silly I know, but I can't help feel that way. What do you think. __________________

I struggle with that too... only pic works fine for me. Oddly, it's the word photo I tend to avoid. Since the first year I started shooting I've always hated the term 'photo-art'... it's just wrong for me. Not that I don't think photography can be art, it's just that term... sounds like a cheap marketing blurb or something. I use 'shot' and 'image' more than anything else, but I use photo sometimes too.
Pics is a friendly sounding word to me, like something you share. Images are creations to me, more than a shot from a camera, they have time invested in them either in preparation, a shooting session or post production or all three. Shots are something you have, might be images, might be pics... you have a shot or you got the shot. How's that for dime store over-analysis? :![]() |

For me, snapshots are clearly defined as being taken without regard to composition, background or perspective. Once you become a photographer... it's bloody hard to ever take another snapshot.
...but that's just my own definition. Chip |

...I like 'image' best
![]() ...IMHO it best describes the fact, that it is *my* image/view, achieved by settings, viewpoint, processing, printing, etc, etc, that I am 'showing the world' for all I care, I wouldn't mind being a full-time 'imageer' ![]() also adds something 'magical' in the sound to it... ![]() ...€0.0000002... I guess in terms of nomenclature I'm still stuck in the film days - in general, I call prints rooted from exposed film "photos" where prints from digital origins I call "prints."
Digital images, I call "images" - although there are also digital "pictures" which are not so good, but better than snapshots, which are totally off-hand without any forethought whatsoever (which is not to say that there can't be a spontaneous photograph of very high quality). "Shot" can be applied to anything, as in "Great shot," "nice shootin," or "DAMMIT! I missed the shot!" "Pictures" and "photographs" also have additional distinctions for me: A "picture" is not as artful, for lack of a better term, or perhaps as technically superior to a "photograph." I got that from (I think) Christian Behr, who asks people when they're going to "stop taking pictures and start making photographs." I dislike the terms "pics" and "pix" - they imply a casuality (is that a word? It is now) that seems to dismiss the effort involved in production. |
