Does anyone know of a camera case that can be used safely while riding a bicycle?
I ride daily and would like to be able to take my Nikon D-300 with maybe a 50mm lens with me on the rides. I see so many photo opportunities but don't have the camera with me. I've seen cases that allow you to put the camera in with lens attached but I don't see any padding that would protect the camera. Anyone have some suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help. ![]() __________________

For those types of situations, I prefer a good Point & Shoot in my pocket.

I sometimes use a Domke insert and put it inside my pannier. The camera rides inside the insert. I use the two compartment insert with middle divider removed. My D200 with prime lens slips into it like a glove. The pannier is a Bike Nashbar two sided simple pannier ($25). Another idea would be to just buy one of the grocery bag panniers. Basically the fold out pannier that fits a grocery bag. Designed to make runs to the grocery store obviously. However you could just put your camera bag inside the pannier. My suggestions all are based on having a rear rack. I ride the Surly Long Haul Trucker and have a Surly rear rack that is rated for 80 lbs of weight.
I used to use a handlebar bag that I carried on my Eisentraut Limited touring bike (sold it a long time ago). I just cut out some foam so that my camera with lens would just fit inside the bag with foam. I still have the bag but the mounting hardware does not work with my Surly which has a very fat handlebar stem. Good luck. |

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I think what I am going to do is get one of the Lowenpro LTZ styles and reinforce it with padding. This way I can wear it around my chest and be prepared for those shots as they arise.
This is a great site for getting solutions to problems. Maybe we should loan it out to governments? LOL! Quote:
