This is a different type of forum that really doesn't compete with DPR. There is an opportunity to
discuss gear here, but there is also greater activity in discussions related to photography. You're
also less likely to get banned here if you differ with the admin or a moderator.

I agree, no comparison at all. DPReview is a whole different animal... or I should say the people are a different breed.

If you enjoy DPReview, then enjoy it for what it's good at and enjoy here for what you can find here. There is room for two forums in your life... but no more than 3 tops.

I have enjoyed aspects of DPR. I usually got some feedback on any pictures I posted, but it seemed like a lot of comments were coming from people who didn't necessarily know any better than I did! That wasn't the case all the time, but I feel like I've leanred a ton more about photography and gear here already. I've just jumped in and asked questions and have received very helpful and knowledgeable advise.
I really like how you can just use the "browse" function to upload a picture here.
The color scheme is much easier on the eyes here, IMHO!
The caliber of pictures I see here is superior to DPR. And the photographers are willing to share how they achieve their results. I think there are a lot of people like me (just starting in the digital photo world) who are posting at DPR, and I feel I have more to learn here, where there are more experienced people posting.
DPR was very helpful to me in getting to know my P&S, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of activity in that area here. Now that I'm looking to move up to a DSLR, I think I like it here!

Oh goodness...there are lots of reasons.

It is so much friendlier. I really don't like that people on DPR seem quite comfortable with slamming others. Ok, if you see a piece of crud picture that someone is planning on entering in a contest they have to pay $150.00 for or something, maybe tell them you don't think that it is up to snuff, but tell them nicely and ask to help them pick a different picture. Even horrid photographers can usually manage take a good picture every once in a while. Heck, a family friend has a friend who loves photography but in the 40 or so years our friend has known him, he has only had one shot turn out well on his camera. The reason...a kangaroo took the picture. Seriously! Somehow this man can screw up any shot, but when off traveling somewhere (I don't know if it was Australia, or somewhere that had kangaroos in a park or what) he was where there were a bunch of kangaroos. One of them came up to get some food from him or whatever and accidentally snapped a picture with his camera (not of that kangaroo). It was apparently perfectly in focus, and perfectly exposed and just a beautiful picture of some flowers nearby. I don't think he'd be disqualified if he had entered it in a contest, after all...how would the kangaroo sue him for the rights to the picture!?

Second...I like the format of this one better. I like the smilies, the colour capabilities though I don't use it much, I like that I can mark some posts unread so I can get back to them later, I like that we are allowed to make suggestions, even if they are hairbrained, and our requests are listened to.

Third...I love that the moderators and admin care about keeping this a friendly place that listens to the users, and in spite of also being good photographers they don't seem to think they are the bees knees and we are the lowly umm...pollen? (couldn't think of something pathetic to go with bees knees which I suppose aren't as spiffy as all that anyway but you all know what I mean, or so I'm hoping). It isn't a matter of us vs. them.

That's probably enough for now. So far I'm loving this board though.

I am a Canon shooter, you are a Nikon shooter. I promise to not insult you because of it. Go try that at DPR. Everyone here is positive and encouraging so far. I, too, look at DPR, and can't believe the pent up hostility that permiates the other place.

Right now, they're different animals. All forums are different. I've used all the forums and been banned from most (for being myself, not rude). I see this one as a cross between robgalbraith and fred miranda. Right now, at least. I don't see much dpreview personality here. Not saying any of this is good or bad. Just how I see it. Rock on.

Also, ever notice how many photo forums are done in black. What's with that?

I like the yellow here. Wakes me up, sort of.

Now, tartar, go post a link to this thread over at dpreview and watch the sheet hit the fan.

I am hoping for more civility

At DP review, there are a few stars and the rest are treated like rank amateurs, at least for image posts. Then there is the constant Nikon versus Canon thing and if you have trouble with either, the loyalists rise up in arms.

Maybe the real reason I came here is because I hope to get more response to my posts than I do at DP review.

I am dissapointed that DPReview in that the posts fly off page 1 in 30 mins in the Nikon D70 forum. It's hard to get critique and comments. That said, with this site being so new it's hard to get critique here too due to lack of traffic.

Hopefully things will pick up here and I will not need to post elsewhere.

A simple way to increase traffice would be to Invite someone else to join... It's painless

I can now proudly say that I've got someone else to join - although he's a bit shy in posting so far.

I'm still working on a plan to promote PC within other like-minded forums. I call it the 'Kamakaze Instant Message Service' - we'll see if it works... (note: doesnot include unsolicited mail!).

I feel that DPreview is good for the headlines for newest releases, in-depth reviews by reviewers, and the short comments by users (not to be confused with the forums)...but in the forums, I sometimes believe, and maybe I am just oversensitive, that there is a brusqueness, rudeness, that is overbearing, maybe because I am a novice...

This site is great, as the attitude of the pros and semi-pros is one of helpfulness (hell, just look at my posts and those of you who have been kind enough to offer civil answers with detailed explanations...truly, the type of answer I would expect in a class, taught by a teacher who really cares)...I appreciate all of you and your patience...while not playing favorites, and in no special order, th0t, hartcons, pavel, alice have been especially kind and patient with me...

I also like the fact that the background is not black, and that most recent posts are easy to find, and the threads have continuity with date and time posted...I do not enjoy seeing a post that says "2 hours ago" or "3 days ago"...

This forum site has taken all the flaws with other sites, corrected them, and has maintained a civil atmosphere, with an attitude of caring and helpfulness from the "smart ones" to the "not-so-smart ones" and for that I am grateful...

Don't screw it up... : :-*

I would choose this forum any day over DPR. Sure it is new and sure there needs to be more activity but that will come in time. The friendly informal atmosphere here is a welcome change. There is way too much real sarcasm at DPR and although there is a we bit here it is meant in a humorous light hearted way as opposed to "lets see who we can upset today" at DPR. I have struck one new poster here already that exhibited all the traits of a hardened DPR user and tried some of his rude mannerism with me but I managed to blow it off in a very friendly way even though I had quite different thoughts in my head. It really isn't hard to remain civilised and I and sure PC will stay this way.
