Default Could someone please explain...

what kind of turkey or chicken makes a big enough breast for those huge deli meats that get sliced?

I'm at the meat counter in the supermarket yesterday and ask for 1/2 lb of smoked turkey breast and chicken breast. While I watch the butcher unwrap the big package of meat to slice it, I suddenly wonder: how do they process the meat to get it in such a BIG package (10lbs or so) like that? That's not a single breast (obviously) so how do I really know that turkey breast is all that is in it?

Sometimes I think too much...

Yeah, I think it's best to not dwell on where food comes from... if you want to enjoy it anyway. :P

Nuggets remind me of gold. Gold is found in veins. Chicken nuggets must be some part of the birds' cardiovascular system. In other words, organ meat.

Depends on your definition of meat. They really are the pork hot of the poultry world. Everyone know what a "pork hot" is? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_hot

I once saw a documentary about 'mechanically recovered meat' (MRM). It was a topical programme at the time of the UK's BSE crisis. It's amazing what can be recovered from what appears to be a meat-free carcass... All that slurry then gets squashed together and before you know it you're munching away at KFC.

So much for not dwelling on where food comes from...

So, lemme get this straight, Ground meat isn't gound at all... it's slurried and mechanically recovered? Sounds like you could make chicken nuggets at a paper mill!

I think I'll start growing my own meat. At least I know where it comes from at that point.

Think the neighbor's will mind a few chickens, turkeys and the odd steer? Think of the fertilizing potential!
