If President Elect Obama were the incoming CEO of a corporation, he would now be preparing for the first act of his tenure: A massive write-off of the mountains of rotted junk buried on the company's balance sheet and an announcement that recovery will take a long, long time.
This flush would clear the way for several years of better than expected results. It would also take advantage of the new leader's one chance to blame the sorry state of the organization on his sorry predecessor.
President Obama began this process last night, in his victory speech, when he noted that restoring the country's health might take more than a term. In the next few weeks, he should go well beyond this:

• The deficit will be more than $1 trillion a year for several years
• The country needs a massive new fiscal stimulus
• The housing market will continue to decline through at least 2010
• Interest rates and taxes will eventually have to rise (after the economy stabilizes)
• Weak corporations have to be allowed to fail
• Millions of homeowners will lose their house
• Unemployment will probably rise to 10%
• The government simply cannot "bail the country out" -- not because it lacks the will, but because it lacks the power

In short, Obama needs to acknowedge reality, erring on the side of overstating the problems and challenges, and he needs to prepare the country for several tough years. Because if he doesn't, within six months of his taking office, the country will have forgotten all about the prior administration and will instead be blaming everything on him.

The people may blame him for the mistakes of the previous administration, but of course they would be wrong. I think that a lot of people were well aware of the doubling of the national dept since Bush came into office. I also suspect that the majority will know full well the problems that he has inherited since the Bush administration. They surely voted for him knowing that.

You know, I've really enjoyed this election, and for those who don't know me, I'm a Brit so have nothing at all of significance to say on it as it will not directly affect me (though it will affect the world in many subtle ways).

But I'll tell you that a lot of people I know, and many I only know via this medium, found this election to be almost a personal significance for themselves and got very wrapped up with it all.

Right now I really admire and am almost envious of the very American ability of reinventing yourselves. Though there have been many things that have come out the US that I've disagreed very strongly with, the fact is that the American Dream really can exist. Only in America could this happen. You should be very proud of still having the ability to shock and surprise yourselves as well as the rest of the world .

Uh, yeah. Know when the first blip on the recession that "started" after Bush was in office?

November 2000....two months before he was inaugrated.

Everyone forgets that the dotbomb period actually started in February 2000 (I know because I was calling friends from my office at a major ISP telling them to bail out of tech stocks ).

Bush got the rap even though the damage already started during Clinton's tenure....and no one remembers.

Maybe we're talking at cross purposes. I thought you were referring to the bailout bill for the banking sector. That was around $700 billion. Are you saying that Obama managed to generate over $700 billion for his campaign, or is there some other bailout bill that you're referring to?

Not sure about the tears, but one of the weirdest things I heard last night was when Obama was giving his acceptance speech. He punctuated every paragraph with a 'yes we can', which was a nice touch. But then the crowd started to repeat 'yes we can' in the same way as the congregation say 'Amen' in church after the priest has said it. My God - maybe he really is the messiah .

I wish that Obama and the Democrats get the opportunity to try their vision of Utopia out. Really. I do. Because I feel it's the only way for people to truly see their effects. And I don't think that, once things are in place for a while, the effects are going to be as Utopian as they think.
