Interesting. I'd never thought of using a converter with the 200-500.

Autofocus wouldn't necessarily work on all models, since the widest aperture with the teleconverter is effectively f/8.

Well,I just tried and it worked. Of course I didn't use any 3rd party equipment. I had used a Nikon 1.4X TC.

I have thought off using the DX mode with this combo. I will surely post such results.

Thanks.

Wasn't a problem at all. Auto focus did work comfortably in the combo D810+200-500+1.4X TC.

I am now planning to use this combo in DX mode to get an effective FL of 1050mm. If I am getting a good result, I will surely post such results here.

Thanks.

There may have beenthings helping you with the Nikon 810, such as using cross- or double cross-type autofocus areas, a generally higher-performance system that is actually speced for use at f/8, or some such. You won't necessarily get this help with semi-pro or enthusiast-grade bodies such as most DX bodies are. It will be interesting to hear how the DX bodies perfrom, win, lose, or draw. (I expect your 810 to perform much the same in DX mode as in regular FX mode.)

Thanks for the input.

Before I stepped into the Nikon band wagon, I was a Canon user and I had been using a 5DMk2 and a 7DMk2. The 7DMk2 body, a 1.6 FOVCX body, used to autofocus 400mmf/5.6+1,4xTC comfortably. In fact it was designed for that. I tried D810+200-500+1.4XTC combo in DX mode and autofocus is working. I have still not presented a shot taken in that mode here. But I had no proiblem in DX mode also. I guess, Nikon's D500, a 1.5 FOVCX body, would also support autofocus in the 200-500+1.4X tC combo. Since I am using a D810, all my discussions and presentations are essentially limited to only D810.

Nikon has a list of cameras that support focusing with a maximum aperture of f/8: https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/B...d=1&lang=en_GB

The first ones were the D4 and D800/E which were released together in 2012.

Though to be fair, I was able to get Nikon’s D3S to accurately focus lens and teleconverter combinations with a maximum aperture of f/8... it just wasn’t guaranteed by Nikon as acceptable performance or a recommend configuration. The D4 and D800/E were/are more consistent when focusing with a maximum aperture of f/8.

Michael, thanks for the input. Since my highest configuration is D810 and the combo works, I am happy. And I do not plan to migrate to higher configurations, not at this age.
