The J5 is quite good (a friend has one) in terms of IQ. I need a viewfinder, so won't be getting a J5, perhaps the V4 will have the viewfinder / IQ / controls that I'm looking for.

In the meantime, you can get an eyeful of images from the entire Nikon 1 series here:
Thomas Stirr Photography

He has some remarkable work, and likes the J5 IQ.

I'm thinking cheap so I'm thinking J1 at the moment. Possibly after Christmas when people want to offload everything they can in order to pay bills.

The J1 isn't bad in good light. Here's an example https://www.flickr.com/photos/jerryh.../in/dateposted

I must admit I am very impressed by the j series. I'm not sure I want to spring for a new camera though. On the other hand, this year's j5 will be next years cheap secondhand camera

I like the "J" series myself particularly the "V3". My problem is I don't see a hot shoe for an accessory flash, unless I'm not seeing it on their web page.
So far, for me, the Sony A6000 seems to fill the bill, even though I would prefer to stay with Nikon.

Why would you want a flash? The combination of high iso and d lighting should mean the times a flash is necessitated will be minimal.

I would use external flash for high speed photography but that's about it. I had a 580ex2 for my Canon kit but sold it because it was never used.

The built-in flash occasionally comes in handy for an outdoor fill light when the ambient lighting is otherwise too contrasty. I don't use one that often and wouldn't complain if my camera model was not equipped with one, but I don't carry an external unit unless I expect to use it.

Off camera flash, fill-flash for portraiture, many uses.

I noticed the j1 with 10-30 lens is now selling for about $125. That's a bit of a drop from the September 2011 msrp of $650! Id say 80% depreciation.

I'll probably hold off getting one til after Xmas when everybody will be offloading. Jan - March is the dead time in retail when I should get the best secondhand deals.

If the j1 looks good compared to my 30D, I might sell off the last of my Canon kit and possibly get a later j series.

I agree there should be lotsa J1's [etc etc] for sale after Xmas.

I disagree that the reason is to pay bills. I bleeb the reason will
be cuz peeps got new phones for Xmas that obsolete their J1's.

Don't know what kinda phone you use or will be using next, but
do consider whether there's any point in carrying an extra item
[a J1] with you if it's not better than current phone cameras.
