make your decisions about which mode to use based upon an intelligent assessment of the shooting scenario shooting in auto is easy in most circumstances priority when needed for better exposures without flash similar to auto aperture if bokeh is warranted for fast moving objects shutter speed dont forget to adjust iso for each condition auto iso can be used when necessary your welcome

I shoot in manual 100% but then i want to learn how to take a good shot and i'm willing to put the time in to get it . I've spent years taking ok shots in auto and thats not what i want to do .
If i get a bit lost in what i am doing i flick to auto to see what the camera wants to do and then back to manual and work around the auto settings . It may not be the best way but thats what i do . |

I have a D60 and a D90 and shoot most of the time in P mode , I never use full auto ( green )
I can use all functions including manual , but only use it when its really needed which is not often. There are several adjustments auto wont let you use , the function that I use most on both my cameras is the Exposure Compensation , auto locks it out . But it really depends on what you are taking photos of , a scene with very even lighting is easy to get right , its when the lighting gets difficult that you need to compensate . Then there is a whole host of other things you can control if you know how , with all the other adjustments the camera has . You should post a few photos so ppl can have a look and perhaps make a few suggestions , if they think are needed |

I use aperture priority mode when I want control over DOF , but I still use exp comp with it ,
I take a lot of Landscape photos up in the Mountains and the sky is always a few stops brighter than the rest of the scene , the exp comp is used all the time so as not to blow the highlights , shadow I can adjust with PP . I sometimes will meter off the sky and set the exposure manually but the end result is the same and its quicker to use the exp comp . Both my cameras are set to -0.7 permanently and I only ever need to go lower - , never have to raise it + . I use Shutter Priority to control motion , freeze or show some motion blur depending on the subject . |

I am either in M or A. A when shooting events like parties and stuff. Mainly because they are usually indoors and I only have the kit lens so I need to keep it wide open to get a decent shutter speed. M just about every other time. That makes me think more about the shot as far as what DOF do I want? Do I want some motion blur? Basically slowing me down and forcing me to think through the shot.
The only time the camera is in Auto is when my wife is using it for a shool party for the kids or something like that when I can't go. She uses my camera because she hates the shutter lag of a P&S - spoiled her there.... |
