Has anyone had any experience with the Kenko Auto extension tubes for Nikon lenses? I would like to try some macro photography, but don't want to spend a lot of money for a dedicated macro lens.

They work fine, I've been using them for years. They are a little sloppy, mine used to work fine in auto focus mode but now that I'm using a big heavy lens they need to be focused manually. Auto focus was kind of nice for the extreme close ups have a very limited DOF but I have gotten used to shooting in manual.

I have the Kenko automatic tubes as well and they worked just fine for me back when it was my D50 and a 50mm f1.8 lens. I rarely use them now because they were such a hassle for me. I never got the right combination for the size image I could see in my mind. It took so long to take more than one image of a subject. I finally broke down and bought a macro lens (Tokina, with which I am more than pleased). I still use the tubes now and then for special purposes or even with the macro lens to get > 1:1.

I use them often, I really enjoy them on my 50mm and my 70-200vr.
I have never had a dedicated macro lens so I have no comparison. Biggest challenge I have is controlling DOF, it is shallow depending on your combination you are using. My flickr account has a few examples to look at, keep in mind still realtive newb here. It has been the best $170 I spent just for the enjoyment of photograpy. |

Thanks David and Rich for your replies. I think I'll give the extension tubes a try. I'm not ready to spend the amount of money a dedicated macro lens would cost at this time.
