Default Nikon codec for Win 7 64-bit

Just upgraded to Win7 64-bit so I can use 8GB RAM and of course can no longer view my RAW files.

Anyone know of a codec that will let me view .nef files in Windows 7 64-bit? Seen on some other forums the 32-bit codec from Nikon won't work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think you will have to wait for all your programs to avail updates. Does your printer even work?

I posted this in the Canon forum, but it works for Nikon files too.

Bonner - No problem with my printer, although I haven't tried to share it yet......

swampler - Thanks a bunch, I can now see the pics in Windows.

My problem know is that Elements 7 does not recognize the files. I downloaded the most current Camera RAW update and put the 64bit 8BI file in the correct folder, but no dice. Photos won't load into the organizer or editor. Any ideas?

Glad the codec worked for you.

Not sure about Elements, does it have Adobe Bridge like the full Photoshop does? I believe you have to open the RAW files in bridge before going to Photoshop and it may be the same for Elements. Hopefully someone else can let you know for sure.

Ok, who knew that loading the 64bit 8BI file was the wrong thing to do. Load the 32bit and it works fine. Why do they even have a 64bit if it doesn't work?

Thanks for your help swampler.

Did you install 64 bit elements or 32 bit? I suspect the camera raw has to match the program.

Thanks for the K, James.

Found out the 64bit Camera RAW file from Adobe is for other Adobe programs that are 64bit. PE7 is a 32bit program that needs the 32bit RAW plug-in. Begs the question of why they put the 64bit version in the Elements plug-in.

windows 7 will not be bought by me , i don't like the looks, i hate it when they distibuate a OS that you have to complement your self (internet explorer and so on ) it may run smooth but i prefer vista home preium on the main pc and windows xp pro on the laptop and windows xp home on the rest

I have been using Vista for a year and half and have had no problems withit, I like it. I went with 7 because I got a 64bit version for free and I wanted 64bit so I could get 8GB of RAM. Like any new OS, it is taking so getting used to but overall feels a lot like Vista.

Not sure what you mean about having to "complement" it. Do you mean that you have to add explorer yourself? If so, then the reason you have to do that is due to the EU forcing Microsoft to not bundle explorer with Windows through antitrust rulings. Windows 7 E coming to Europe without Internet Explorer

I was wondering about that myself, especially since mine came with IE 8. I didn't realize it was packaged differently in the EU.

yeah, sorry about that. So far, Win7 is pretty cool, once I figured out the RAW stuff anyway.

Having tried 4 or 5 times last night to install 7 for a friend who just sprang for 300 usaBucks for it I'm wondering this am why a brand new dvd would have a 'missing or corrupt' needed file which continually 'stops' the installation.

Planning to try installing to a different machine today. At this point I'm simply trying to find out if the dvd is in fact flawed.

I formatted an XP box earlier this week to install W7 Home Premium - was up an running in less than an hour - one of the easiest OS installs I've ever done - at least since DOS came on a single floppy disk. Quick, painless. The more I find the little things in the UI the more I like it.

I have downloaded and installed a free demo version of fastpictureviwer. It works fine with Windows 7 64 bit. It shows NEF files as thumbnails as well as full pictures directly from windows. I have not decided yet if I will by the full version.

If you are looking for x64 codecs for Vista x64 and Windows 7 that will display PSD and NEF thumbnails, check out Ardfry...

View Photoshop PSD files in Windows - x64 PSD CODEC for Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP

File extension NEF support - x64 CODEC for Windows Vista - Windows Imaging Component CODEC for Nikon RAW files

They are not free, but some things (including these little gems) are worth paying for.

I am running the Beta of the PSD codec, and finally have PSD thumbnails displaying in Vista x64's File Explorer and more importantly in the Photoshop and Elements File Open dialogs. What a treat!

I have heard this complain on a few other forums. You can try calling MS and, having them ship another disk but, I have heard they arent doing that easily.
Personally I dont like Win7 it is just to MAC looking for me. Though I have no doubt I will eventually have to upgrade to it but, I will be kicking and, screaming about it. For me XP has been flawless. But then I had ME handed to me as a freebie and, once I tweaked it, it ran without any BSODs and, problems with having more that 512 in memory.
